Re: Survival tips for beginners
The most important thing for survival isn't stuff, (gadgets, food, water, etc.). It's knowledge. Knowledge about what conditions you might have to face, and skills you'll need to survive. How many people think about their toilet back-flowing into their house because there's no electricity to remove the excess in the street pipes?

You have to imagine in detail what might happen, before you can figure out what you can do about it. Daydream and learn. This will help you figure out what stuff you should have, and what skill manuals you need to keep.

I agree knowledge is the best protection you have. as for the "imagine in detail", you probably wont be able to tell what happened, so you will have no details for hours or days, imo.

Imagine every possible scenario now, to guide you about what to procure and what to learn.

Its just a gothering of tips for any situation. I started it thinking about what kind of cooking stove you can put in an underground shelter or a hut in the woods/mountains.
You give some very good advices in your post.
eg.
Panic is a real enemy and there must be thoughts on how to avoid it.
How to cover your house, make it look abandoned and looted.
You dont have to cook, eat what you have that is ready to eat. etc.

Here's one important tip nobody has mentioned yet.

Water can be bulky and heavy, especially if you have to carry it with you. -But it's necessary. You can live for months without food, but only 3 days without water. All kinds of drinks come in evaporated form. Evaporate your water until there's only powder left, then it's easy to store or carry. All you have to do is re-hydrate it, and voila, you have water to drink!

Re: Survival tips for beginners
underground u can not use fire. this limits u. the co will kill u.even with a chimney it will pull the oxygen and burn it. you will have no air.but now u are not talking a beginner surviving. u are talking a prep and bugout spot. not what a beginner would do.
some rules are the same. but u are thinking way in advance and CAN make mistakes and learn from them.u is looking at a stream flow to generate electric. wire this back to the bugout spot to cook. same rule as before no fire=no smoke signals above ground. u can't go with a large windmill because it would be easier to spot. built right it will look like a beaver dam to anyone walking by.

Re: Survival tips for beginners
now u are talking a place to hide out for 1-5 years. the biggest problem will be growing your own food under these circumstances.u can't smoke meat.and u can't just plant ground or have livestock.to grow enough food the average person required 1/4 of an acre. but that is planted ground. since the primary function of the land is to hide, the amount of needed land will go up considerably. and it will have to be adjusted up again since u are scavenging food not raising it yourself. the farther out u must travel for food the more chances of being found.weigh the odds.
i think the better end is to use the landscape and nature to your advantage. this is why ppl want off the beaten ath places that can't be seen from the road.
to really seriously unravel these ideas,it takes a group of close true friends. they sit and brainstorm ideas. research info and meet like each month.10-20 ppl could set up a good spot this way.

The effort to generate electricity will be a final step in order to support your living area or small community, but long after things will have settled down, or at least have become more safe.

About the fire pit, i run into an article explaining how to built and hide your campfire from enemies, The Dakota Fire Pit.

So i have a story from the WWII war. My aunts mother lived in a small mountain village -the houses there are not close to each other- with her small children. She had a small garden at the back of the house where she grew mostly vegetables and had two goats.
There are places on the mountains, like small gorges that are either sound repeaters or sound proof. Especially when there is a river down there, the water sound can cover the animals sounds. So, everytime the soldiers came to the village to gother food and animals, she was taking the goats down the gorge by the river and this is how she saved them from been taken.

Re: Survival tips for beginners
this thread is messed up. you say beginner and then tell them what they should buy way before anything happens. in a true survival situation, a beginner is going to be your average person. it is not someday, maybe i will need this or that. it is immediately, right now what do i do?? how do i survive? anyone who buys half the stuff you are advertising or pushing is not a survivalist outdoorsman. they aree a freaking yuppie.
true survival will take knowledge and comon sence.
1st point: in a full on survival situation or apocalypse: DO NOT COOK FOOD. the average person has how many extra cans of food in their kitchen that they never eat???beans, mixed veggys, carrots, applesauce, pears??? a hand operated can opener can keep you fed for days.barrinig the can opener, you WILL find a way to open the dam can. knife, screwdriver, handsaw, some how.
why do you do this??? smart people will THINK 1ST.NOT PANIC. if you cook,u create fumes.fumes is like opening the window and say"kill me now.take my food." you will be dead.
2nd the cpl days that the can food buys= they kill each other. this means you have less ppl coming for u.better odds. plus during these extra days, you use your head and go back to grade school and what is rule #1???? DO NOT PANIC. STOP AND USE YOUR FREAKING HEAD.
the ppl who did just that much have survived longer than many. in cities you may have just outlived 50% of the population.

now u have food. water?? water does not mean you have to go to the river and get h2o. it does n ot mean pure water in bottles. AGAIN "THINK". all those cans of fruit i told u to eat contain what? syrup. syrup is what??? LIQUID.
LIQUID=WATER. juices and canned foods will give u water. how many ppl actually follow the rules of drinking 1 gallon of water per day now?? how much pure water or bottled spring water do u really drink??? most don't. they drink other liquids containing water.coffee, tea, fruit juice, milk, etc.open the frig. warm liquid is still liquid.
now once you know something happened and u have kept calm and u sat down to THINK, how long will it take to figure out everyone else is panicing??? they have not yet emptied the water pipes. go fill your jugs now.fill you tub for toilet water.fill the sink.fill until it stops running. AGAIN YOU DID NOT PANIC AND U THINK 1ST.that alone is better than the average, and again till buy u time to stay ahead of them.

shelter.remember the 3 things u need to live yet????this is grade school stuff folks.
what is shelter?? it is not a fancy $5000 tent or boat or cabin.we are talking u need this RIGHT NOW,situations. shelter is protection. if u are a fireman in a forest fire that could be a insulated, foil sleepingbag that the foresters our west carry. it is to save your life.
protection from what??? if u need protection before u need water and food, u have reflexes to guide u. since OP did not state what we are surviving i will not speculate.you will react and trust those animal instincts or you will die. that is simple. assuming u did that and have found a place to stop and calm down enough to think,we will go forward. you need protection from the crowd, riff RAFF,goon squad, bums, terrorists, gov agents, robo cops. whatever has threatened u and your family. u do not want to b found. so the shelter is anything that will hide u.
so u do everything to be invisibe and quiet. shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. and lights off. block the windows with blankets, dressers, towels, etc.no flashlights,no candles,no fire,no music,no TV. you now have survived the 1st night.in the morning while the riff raff sleeps,u need to do more.make the house look robbed.hide the door.put something in front f it. you don't need that fancy couch,u need to live.throw a char out in the lawn. break a window pane.remember u still have it covered on the inside.give the bad guys reason to think u are gone. they won't bother u then.

i have taught u to survive almost a week. mnore ppl are dead.there is more supplies now since there is less demand.and u have had time to regroup and think.good luck. do not out think it by buying all the junk. use what you have already.

i once saw a youtube video that showed how to open a can with a rock. if i remember correctly, you rub the top of the can on the rock (basically sanding it down) until the seal is broken.
