Yezidi Girl Wins Title Miss Nineveh in Miss Iraq 2017 Contest

The Ministry of Culture specially recognized Miss Nineveh, Lydya Khallat, a Yezidi and exceptionally talented girl from Bashiq who fled with her family in 2014 after the Islamic State (IS) militants overran her town.

For the first time women of Arab, Kurdish, Turkmen, Chaldo-Assyrian and Yezidi origin participated together in the contest, reads a press release of Miss Iraq Organization.

Deputy Minister of Culture of Iraq, Fawzi Atroshi, who is also the supervisor of the contest, remarked on Vian's victory: "it is her exceptional qualities that made her win... not only is she cultured and well educated but her beauty evokes aristocracy".
