It exposes Trumpbots for what they are. It was summed by the final line in the film Shadows and Fog: "They need illusions like they need the air."

Agreed, it means to stoop to lies for convenience or necessity, to avoid elephants in the room and to compromise your person and your integrity usually at the behest of some nominal authority with an implied threat...loss of job, sex, home, earnings, savings and future prospects.
