When faced with similar situation, to help ease the pain I vowed to make people better dog owners thereby making some other dog better cared for.

In memory of my dear friends who I lost to doggie cancers, I give "The Monks of New Skete" to people who get puppies. I have given many of this away and just ask the new pet owners to read it as it helps explain the phases a puppy goes through as a canine.

Its really helpful, and insightful. Sometime I have given to friends, put more often its people I dont know. The auto mechanic, the new pharmacist, the clerk at the store, one of my employees...I have run into them with new puppies and come back with a puppy present.

Sometimes I autograph it "For Tashy and Stikene...."

Sorry for your loss. This is one of the hardest things to have to do. Your pet is no longer suffering. For us, we never forget them. Give a donation in your pet's name to a local shelter or to your Veterinarian to help another pet owner who can't afford to pay for their pet's care. It helps to ease your pain. Hugs...it gets better with each passing day.

Same with me recently and another that is just about 16 years old now on the way out.

Remember the good times with your dog, nobody can take that away from you. Your dog lives in your memories and with you.

I keep listening to the Tim McGraw song "My old friend". He was who I would have hugged first if it was someone else and he's just gone. I keep jingling his collar to feel like he's still here

Went through the same thing 2 years ago. The vet and an assistant came out to the acreage and put her to sleep as I held her head in my hands.

Damn Ninja just showed up and started cutting onions as I typed this.

Mourn for now. Remember your beast and hold him in your heart.
Then in a few months, find a puppy that needs a master and home. Your home obviously has love for beasts and the money for a critter. Nature abhors a vacuum.

We got a rescue a couple weeks later and it made things better, but you never forget the good ones.

I'm so sorry. After a little while please get another dog. There's always room in your heart for more.

I went with my sister Easter Sunday to bring her kitty to the vet's because that Saturday night, she couldn't move her back legs. By morning, she was still the same.

The vet said she had had a stroke, and that she was in pain. It's not easy to think about because aside from her legs, she was still her normal little self. :( I can't think about it or look at her picture without tearing up.

I'm not sure if an animal dying by natural causes is easier or not, but knowing that when we left her at the vet's she was still alive...was extremely difficult. It was all so fast. :(

I sometimes jingle lil Puddin's collar, too. The first week or so, I heard a bell sound all the time, and I'd also see these little 'flashes' where I could actually see her... walking around a corner or something.

We just had to do the same thing recently.It sucks but ALL wounds heal in time......And bring the tomatoes in.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. Feel for ya mate. I had to do the same a little over a year ago, 16 awesome years, the best mate i ever had. In time you will start to feel better, then when you feel it's right , look for a new best mate..:)..xox
