CIA Rushing Resources to Bin Laden Hunt

Armed with fresh intelligence, the CIA is moving additional man power and equipment into Pakistan in the effort to find Osama bin Laden and his deputy Ayman al Zawahri, U.S. officials tell ABC News.
"Reports that the trail has gone stone cold are not correct," said one U.S. official. "We are very much increasing our efforts there," the official said.
People familiar with the CIA operation say undercover officers with paramilitary training have been ordered into Pakistan and the area across the border with Afghanistan as part of the ramp-up.
Pakistan officials say they are aware that CIA teams have increased their presence in northern Waziristan since last September when Pakistan withdrew its troops from the area under a much-criticized "peace deal" with tribal leaders.
Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell testified last week that current intelligence "to the best of our knowledge" puts both bin Laden and al Zawahri in Pakistan. It was the first time a high-ranking U.S. official publicly identified Pakistan as bin Laden's hiding place.
Past intelligence has indicated that bin Laden often changed locations in March, traveling to hiding places in the mountains once the snow cover begins to melt.

why would the US want to increase "undercover...paramilitary...into Pakistan and the area across the border with Afghanistan"???

Oh for gawd's sake, Bush hasn't bothered with OBL in years, maybe they plan on pulling the rabbit out of Iran in time to justify a strike on another oil-rich (but this time not dis-armed by the int'l community first).
In fact I recall reading that the funds appointed in 2002 to find OBL were less then what it cost to hire 3 investigators. |

Several well-placed Washington sources have reported that, contrary to published reports on Vice President Cheney's meetings in Pakistan with President Musharraf, the primary topic of discussion was not the imminent NATO military actions against the Taliban and Al Qaeda in the Northwest Frontier Province of Pakistan bordering on Afghanistan, which has become a safe-haven for the Afghani insurgents. That situation was discussed, but the primary topic, according to the sources, was the intensification of covert military operations inside Iran.
According to the sources, such military operations have intensified in recent weeks, and involve Baluchi, Azeri and Kurdish ``contras,'' working with Pentagon special operations units, and contractors. According to one account, some of the American-sponsored black operations are being run in conjunction with Afghan drug lords, who cross the border between Afghanistan and Iran regularly, and are now providing cover for American clandestine operatives. One source reported that some senior CIA officials are alarmed at this program, which they see as a deja vu of the 1980s Iran-Contra fiasco, and the Afghansi operations that spawned the Al Qaeda and other ``Salafi'' terror cells. They predict ``more 911 attacks'' as the result of this deluded policy. |

Islamabad - A prominent official in the Afghan Taleban movement announced yesterday the death of Osama bin Laden, the chief of al-Qa'da organization, stating that binLaden suffered serious complications in the lungs and died a natural and quiet death.
The official, who asked to remain anonymous, stated to The Observer of Pakistan that he had himself attended the funeral of bin Laden and saw his face prior to burial in Tora Bora 10 days ago.
He mentioned that 30 of al-Qa'da fighters attended the burial as well as members of his family and some friends from the Taleban. In the farewell ceremony to his final rest guns were fired in the air.
The official stated that it is difficult to pinpoint the burial location of bin Laden because according to the Wahhabi tradition no mark is left by the grave. He stressed that it is unlikely that the American forces would ever uncover any traces of bin Laden.
