Strange isn't it

In a terror attack the number of dead can be stated without their identities confirmed

In an incident where government are seen to be directly responsible, the number of dead cannot be stated without their identities confirmed
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74651032

Not really no.

Its easy to count a few bodies with knife or gun shot wounds or those who have been run over.

A bit harder when a building with hundreds of people is burned to the ground - and there is no official record of how many live there - given the bodies are essentially created.

Hmmm - I think it would be fair to say that the impression given by the media is that Grenfell Tower was a bit of a shabby shithole, full of immigrants on Housing benefit.

Take a look at this. It's a listing for a 2 bed flat in the Tower, which was available from May 2017.

Pretty luxurious by anyone's standards wouldn't you say?

[link to www.rightmove.co.uk]

Rent was £395 pw and it clearly says 'No DSS / Housing Benefit Applicants' - somewhat ironic as it was an ex council/social housing block.

To the person who said it was lies about Residents being on the board of KCTMO:

The KCTMO Board is made up of 15 Members comprising of eight residents, four Council appointed members and three independent members.

More about Emma Dent Coad the newly elected MP.

She is a member of the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority.

She is an opposition member of Kensington and Chelsea London Borough Council, which owns Grenfell Tower, and was formerly a council-appointed board member of KCTMO, which manages the council's housing stock.
In 2013/4 she was a member of the council's Housing and Property Scrutiny Committee.
She has written or contributed to a number of books on architecture and design, including on Javier Mariscal, and has worked on magazines including Building Design.

She is being very vocal about the present situation but very quiet about her past.
Even all her knowledge and connections maybe could have averted this tragedy.

its common for tower blocks to have the odd amount of private rental flats as it is for properties to exist on a rental market average of a normal street.

The flats were recently refurbished but private rental clients have a different spec dependant on the landlord requirement.

The issue isn't the condition of the flats the issue is more about the way people are treated because of class.

The issue is with the fact that critical fire safety materials and resources were absent, gas mains were left unboxed and non fire retarded alongside the only stair case in the block.

The residents had been asking for such issues to be resolved and concerns had been raised multiple times and fell on deaf ears.

That was the problem now that's escalated.

UK readers and posters.

Coincidence? I've just got back from a friends house who lives near me but under a different council and she rents one of their properties.

On Friday she got a letter from her social housing landlord to say they will be doing an electrical safety check in her home and it will take approximately 4 hours. The bottom of the letter it says faulty or untested installations can cause damage to property or even serious injury.

This is the first time such a check has been carried out in the house and for 4 hours apart from the usual boiler and smoke alarm annual tests they do.

Am I jumping to conclusions by thinking this new 4 hour electric check has something to do with councils shitting themselves because of the London tower block fire.

Has anyone else who rents council property had a similar letter.

Its likely they're the only properties with smoke alarms, Rightmove is just a hub for adverts not an actual agent, believe me I've used all those sites in past I'm in social housing myself I know how it all works and I know how the housing and class system works.

And I'm repeating what's in the media because it was live TV I was watching and it was word of mouth that they couldn't water down and numerous times they panicked over language and views and even cut some people down as being conspiracy theorists.

Other reporters were actually firing these questions and views out to MPs and pen pushers involved too.

Aye they are panicking, we had a check recently ourselves prior to this fire our property is only 2 years old though so we are lucky on that front as within that time this property has undergone various inspections as it's passed hands from contractor to landlord, which have also carried out their own checks.

There will likely be a push to check all properties within social housing and I wouldn't be surprised if it would be added to private landlord legislative licensing requirements either.

Every council in the UK is going to reassure their tenants but the Kensington Council .... wow I dont know where to start really, to continue to ignore the residents of Grenfell and leave the offices for the weekend is disgusting. No one came out to talk to them ... the fact they have acted like they have says there is without a doubt a pile of guilt there.
Shame on them. I see there being arrests there before the year is out if the people of Grenfell keep their heads and no rioting takes place.

It's not just the media. On the Grenfell residents' website they repeatedly documented over the years how their concerns over fire safety were neglected. Also, Experts in cladding have said that the cladding is the more flammable type and the facts are that cladding is banned in many other countries for use on high rise buildings.

I am with Tameside Council UK and have had very regular strict checks on my property in every dept. Infact I get fined if I dont keep appointments. I have always being a council tenant felt reassured in my properties with them regarding gas, electric, and structural renovations. I have had problems here and there with minor issues but health and safety have always been strict for me with my council. I moved into flats 2 yrs ago and it had been fitted with bran new wired modern firealarms and the fire service have been to inspect. The fire service have been to most of the properties I have rented through my council. I cant fault them at all and it is obvious the services within Tameside have good relations and work with eachother putting health and safety first. If any of them read this thank you.

My heart is with everyone who is in pain from the Grenfell area

These checks the council are doing appear to be very prompt and urgent as she lives in a normal terraced house and not a block of flats or a tower which I thought would have been their first priority.

I was reading some kind of residents association blog earlier today about all the concerns they have had and which have been ignored over the years. It was quite alarming especially the letter from some office person telling them to remove their discriminating posts. It was a link from this site but I can't find it again to refer to.

They resorted to creating that blog because of all the years of writng to the council and getting nowhere. They could not have done anymore and it could not get any worse. My previous sentence should not even exist. :(

The thing with council property is that a lot of the electrics and gas works tend to hitting the age and due refurbishment, and obviously the newer legislation 17th edition I think it is now for electrics needs to be used to update the electrics and those electrics already updated need to be checked again.

Ive lived in terraced houses before too, and they tend to be among the oldest properties in Britain some as old as 100yo, and I know from first hand the problems that exist in them can be worrying.

I think all social housing will get the full MOT considering what's gone on.

It is the right thing to do isn't it. Fire crews should also work with the council and tenants on regular evacuation drills on tower blocks because they would learn so much so fast if they did this nationwide. The people in these towers will feel far more confident in knowing what to do if fires do occur. Why practice drills on empty set up buildings when you can practice drills on the real thing.

Fire investigation report into Grenfell Tower inferno may not be made public for YEARS

MPs and protestors called for urgent answers as to why the fire spread so quickly

But London fire service say report will not be published until inquest is over
