More are starting to notice it. I gave a presentation to our Government a few weeks ago about replacing all the truck drivers that work in the Oil Fields in For Mac Alberta and S.E. British Columbia. The boardroom went deathly silent when I told them about the impact this will have, especially in the S.E. British Columbia region where the majority of the small towns are completely and totally reliant on drivers wages. I even had one young lady ask me to keep our meeting private and to not let it get out that our own government is privately funding this venture. Up here in Canada our government is very concerned about the huge divide coming between the have and have not's. I suspect it is going to be far far worse for our neighbours to the south. Mark my words, driverless Heavy Haul Trucks (think CAT 793's) will eventually replace approximately 80% of the workforce in S.E. British Columbia. The exact same report I gave to Ottawa will eventually end up on the Board of Directors agenda. They will make a motion to approve this as the savings from eliminating drivers is just too great to ignore. Sad but true. Learn a trade that robots can't do. I heard over 50% of young adults entering high school today will simply exist on a living wage (barely living wage at that). As a worker you need to be a Soldier of Fortune so to speak..work for a place you can get paid the most amount of money for putting up with the least amount of bullshit. When the bullshit outweighs the benefits of employment..time to move on. Gone are the days of pensions, inexpensive family healthcare plans, generous vacation and sick/personal time, annual COLA/merit raises that outpace real inflation .Promotions and pay increases commensurate with the tasks and responsibilities that come with the title.. Now you are rewarded with the work your co-workers can't or won't do and you are expected to like it or be replaced Stand up and speak for truth..even when it's not popular.. |

Those same corps. will end up paying all kinds of penalties and fees for jobs done incompetently and projects running beyond their specified finish dates. When you start adding all these up they might as well have kept their former staff members who at least knew what they were doing. They will also find getting contracts will become harder because nobody wants to work with firms who cannot promise a good return for their money. |

Quoting: Chosen1too It's funny you say this because it's already happening. i.e. - I know several companies who have outsourced IT and Engineering projects to India (HCL) and although it was cheaper labor wise according to the detailed plan, the service and production (eng projects) suck big time. They had to be completely re-done. These companies had to take back over projects and pay US consultants big dollars to complete on time or be forced to pay huge penalties for not delivering on time. This is the little secret they're not telling the masses and unless you experience it first hand, it's simply not on your radar. |

So they gave her notice....but to rub salt in the wound, she had to train her replacement.....about the only bright spot was her getting a big severance in exchange for a non disclosure agreement.... My sister was very much the team player ....she worked a lot of shitty hours to get the job done....but in the end that loyal didn't mean shit.... |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 49978451 [link to www.thelayoff.com (secure)] Beware of big corporations. Lifetime jobs are permanently gone. All the layoffs in my partners IT departments were employees with 15-30 years employment with Nike. b---s--- upper management decided to clean sweep tenured employees and keep H1Bs and anyone under 30..... Beware of big corporations. Lifetime jobs are permanently gone. My partner gave her life (28 yrs) to this company and this is how they treat her? WTF is wrong with people? Baby boomers are trying to protect their profits and hire only H1-Bs that work for $0.50 on the $1. It's disgusting and they keep doing it. Corp America is horribly abusing the system and it pisses me off. There's a bill in congress to fight this abuse, but I don't think it'll gain traction as Corp America won't let it. Call your reps! make it get attention. This needs to end or we working Americans will no longer have a place to work and live. We'll end up on the streets. |

Kellyanne Conway says the answer to being uninsured due to cutbacks in medicaid/obummercare is to get full-time jobs that have insurance. Do you think she might not be in touch she reality? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74867337 If you're over 45 yrs, good luck out there. We are reverting back to the days before health care was a thing; expect life expectancy to drop and misery to rise. Misery that I've already had enough of in myself, family and friends at 55 yrs. I'm right there with you! I'm starting to get very concerned about health care and it eating up my life savings. It's not fair to those of us who bought into their system and now they're changing the rules. Unless you have a good business or a secure life time skillset... Don't get married. Don't have kids. Don't buy a new car. Don't buy a boat. Don't buy any expensive toys. Don't eat out. Don't have cable tv. Don't buy a home. SAVE SAVE SAVE SAVE I'm stating this in all seriousness. You will be miserable if you do. Trouble is that in welfare state countries there is absolutely no mileage in SAVING. If you need the dole (and many many more people will certainly need to claim in the next 5-10 years until they sort out something like Universal wage) then you'll get nothing until you've spent all your savings. |

Computer skills are actually just certifications and hours of experience, same goes for most labor intensive "skilled" positions. I have never found any skills beyond certain athletic prowess that isn't able to be reproduced or mastered with time and effort. Perhaps a few people are naturally gifted conversationalists and are effective manipulators does that qualify as a skill? Point is we're supposed find purpose by perfecting some skill and then make a good living with that skill, however most skills aren't actually skills just repetitive, well learned tasks. I have a skill, I can analyze information and find interesting characteristics others would dismiss, how do I develop that skill into a high paid profession? |
