many more are presumed dead. Entire villages have been destroyed. The death toll will rise throughout the day and more wildfires are expected.

Must spread very fast if so many people were caught by surprise, unable to evacuate.

This is terrible. I hope they will be contained soon.

I have a feeling we will see more wildfires this summer as conditions are extremely dry and not a lot of rain has been forecast. In Belgium farmers have already been told that they are not allowed to use sprinklers on their crops any more because of an imminent water shortage.

I suggest a pin. This is a big story - top story in the local press here. 57 dead so quickly is horrendous and from what I understand, the death toll is likely to rise.

Re: Portugal Wildfire kills 57 people
According to a report in a Dutch newspaper I just read, local police have said that the wildfire probably started because of a lightning strike in a tree. They claim to even have found the tree in question. I don't necessarily want to call conspiracy on this, but I find it slightly strange that they have announced the apparent cause so soon.

(And on a conspiracy note, I noticed that the affected area is close to Fátima...)

Apparently several villages are surrounded by flames so people can't escape nor can rescue services reach them.

"CrossWINDS are rising again"

The Secretary of State for Home Affairs said that the operators are now "very worried because they are raising crosswind" in a "scenario like yesterday. That's where the big explosion took place. "

Jorge Gomes also repeated that, according to the first analysis of the Judiciary Police, "it was a thunderbolt of dry thunder that cracked a tree and there began what has spread." The official says that the operatives on the ground have "difficulty in acting. But we are using the means that circumstances allow us. Let's not regret whether they should all be or not. We are fighting and we are going to win this fight. "

ahh, here is the thread I was looking for..

"Portugal forest fires kill 62 near Coimbra
Luis and other Portugal residents need some good vibes right now to get them through this..

"Most died while trying to flee the Pedrógão Grande area, 50 km (30 miles) south-east of Coimbra, in their cars, according to the government.
Hundreds of firefighters are continuing to tackle the blaze, which has spread across several fronts.
Prime Minister Antonio Costa called it "the greatest tragedy we have seen in recent years in terms of forest fires".
