Science Question: Would someone die instantly if their car hit a solid object at 70mph?
Wouldn't the deceleration knock someone unconscious immediately?

Doing a belly flop from 7 stories is an equivalent.
Not many would survive. 1 in 20 is a guess.

Lot of variables but the instant deceleration from 70mph would defeat most protective airbags, etc. and death would be instant.

Depends, in theory anything above 50mph will kill you.

But I crashed at 100mph and walked away with minor injuries.

mass of the vehicle times velocity, squared. (to get the possible kinetic energy of an impact)

I imagine that taking seatbelts out of the equation would result in the body ejecting but wouldn't that technically increase chances of survival?

If it were a clear path their might be hope but if you're talking about most automobiles it would be like ejecting through a Veg-O-Matic.

Paul Walker was moving between 83 and 90 MPH based on forensic science - he also had been breathing during the fatal car fire that claimed his life. So no, 70mph to 0mph due to collision will not guarantee death provided safety equipment is in proper working order.

Aside from impact injuries the main cause of death would be tearing of a heart valve as the organs continued to move a fraction longer than the rib cage.

It's what killed Princess Di.

There are a lot of variables at play but it's likely.

He went unconscious on impact apparently. That's why he was still breathing in smoke. But There's no way someone could survive an impact going 85mph towards a tree. Your organs will be bursting out of your ribcage at 85mph.

I think that she was still alive moments after the crash though. Her heart moved from the left side to the right side of her chest. I can't remember but I don't think she was wearing a seatbelt.

Yup that's what I heard.

A seat belt would have saved her and she was alive at least until she was on the way to the hospital. But the damage that killed her was a tear.

Depends again on safety systems including the crumpling of the car itself, which can absorb to such an extent that Walker would have survived if aftermarket fuel lines weren't used. There is no sound evidence that Walker was either unconscious or concious during the fire.. personally I think he was awake and authorities wanted to ease the public psyche.

I do recall hearing some very early eyewitness account that there was screaming coming from the car...

FWIW, I barely survived a 35mph crash into a solid wall (don't ask..I was young and stupid) and did have heart and lung injury from the organs slamming into my ribs/chest, but I had no seatbelt or anything to absorb impact.

For a split second they would weigh 100,000 times their own weight and internal organs (and eyeballs) would remain in motion. It's certain death.

I work for an insurance company and I have investigated hundred of cases where this has happened. The answer is no, no one in the car would survive with or without a seat belt. On a side not your eyes would pop out of your head from the force. Very few cases where the eyes didn't pop out.

Depends on the vehicle. With some it is survivable. Some it is not. Depends on the type of impact and angle as well.

Re: Science Question: Would someone die instantly if their car hit a solid object at 70mph?
If the "solid object" was not directly in front of the person, it could be possible. If the immovable large solid object was directly in front of the person, survival is unlikely--but length of hood and motor size and shape could conceivably allow occasional survival--but even then with very serious injury.

unconscious immediately even with seatbelts and airbags cushioning the impact and NO crushing of the car structure.

Survivable as long as the car structure does not collapse and cause crush injuries.

WRONG!

The airbag would secure you. You'd have internal organ damage, but you would survive.

That burned woman on America's Got Talent was the only survivor of a plane hitting the ground at 300 MPH.

Yes, deceleration from 70mph to 0 in a fraction of a second = your brain is mush
