In the Navy they wrap your arm around a ships stanchion and line up to punch you in the arm.....squishing your bicep in between a fist and a steel upright, over and over when you get promoted. We get out pins punched in also.....only ours are on our collars, right over the collar bone. Its called "tacking on your crows".
The politically correct Navy doesn't allow it anymore, but sailors still do it. I was proud to have my crows tacked on every time I made rank....then lost rank.....then made rank again......It's called a TRADITION.
