It was a warning about soviet totalitarianism which no longer exists. If he could have predicted an Islamic invasion of Europe I would be impressed. Orwell was one of those in the know. He was privy to the plans of TPTB . It's not so much about soviet russia, as it is about the future in America. |

Orwell was telling his communist friends he couldn't join in their love and admiration for the totalitarian Soviet Union. |

It was a warning about soviet totalitarianism which no longer exists. If he could have predicted an Islamic invasion of Europe I would be impressed. Brilliant. You took a stab at Orwell, detached Communism and Soviet Union, declared the threat cleared and diverted the attention to a scapegoat of "Islamic invasion", and all this in just a couple of sentences. If they are not paying you well already, you should demand a rise. |
Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 75137544 China 06/24/2017 09:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Now I will tell you the answer to my question. It is this. The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power, pure power. What pure power means you will understand presently. We are different from the oligarchies of the past in that we know what we are doing. All the others, even those who resembled ourselves, were cowards and hypocrites. The German Nazis and the Russian Communists came very close to us in their methods, but they never had the courage to recognize their own motives. They pretended, perhaps they even believed, that they had seized power unwillingly and for a limited time, and that just around the corner there lay a paradise where human beings would be free and equal. We are not like that. We know what no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means; it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now you begin to understand me. |

As it turned out the Muslims turned out to be far the greater threat to Europe than communist Russia. |

Communist lovers, coincidentally. Orwell was a socialist who had a lot of communist friends. I don't think he had a big problem with communism but he recognized how awful the soviet model was. Do you think Merkel is communist? I really don't understand why European leaders are facilitating the Islamic invasion. I'm sure you're going to blame it on a global communist Jewish conspiracy but this makes no sense to me since it will mean the Jewish people are once again driven out of Europe. The Muslims hate them. |

It's neither democratic nor communist nor totalitarian. It's just a great nation regaining its footing in its own way. The Putin way. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75137544 That's a great line which reveals Orwell's hatred for fascism. He put his life on the line and actually picked up a rifle to fight fascists. But it doesn't describe today's world at all. |

As I recall it was among other things about being under constant surveillance? As we all know this is what is happening to us all today on so many levels (many we are not even aware of)so in that way it was prescient. |

It may have been inspired by current events at that time but the message knows no particular government, rather all of them. Call each one what you want but they all go this way in the end. Kudos for him for predicting listening screens in the walls and buzzing floating cameras outside - no one could have thought that would be true until recently...except him. |
