I read the book. It was a warning about soviet totalitarianism which no longer exists. If he could have predicted an Islamic invasion of Europe I would be impressed.

Orwell was a socialist who had a lot of communist friends. I don't think he had a big problem with communism but he recognized how awful the soviet model was.
Do you think Merkel is communist? I really don't understand why European leaders are facilitating the Islamic invasion. I'm sure you're going to blame it on a global communist Jewish conspiracy but this makes no sense to me since it will mean the Jewish people are once again driven out of Europe. No, Putin's Russia harks back to the old days. It's neither democratic nor communist nor totalitarian. It's just a great nation regaining its footing in its own way. The Putin way.

That's a great line which reveals Orwell's hatred for fascism. He put his life on the line and actually picked up a rifle to fight fascists. But it doesn't describe today's world at all.

I read the book years ago at school. As I recall it was among other things about being under constant surveillance?

As we all know this is what is happening to us all today on so many levels (many we are not even aware of)so in that way it was prescient.

It may have been inspired by current events at that time but the message knows no particular government, rather all of them. Call each one what you want but they all go this way in the end. Kudos for him for predicting listening screens in the walls and buzzing floating cameras outside - no one could have thought that would be true until recently...except him.
