RE: Major Thunderstorms Tonight in Wisconsin.... Weird Lightning Though....
I have no idea why, but the incredible storms tonight left me with three anomalies.

1.) I have NEVER seen pink lightning before tonight, but all was pink.

2.) Sulfur smell was in the air.

3.) A ground strike in a corn field ended with a fireball. Was amazing.

Thoughts?

it was blowing pretty good lots of down trees and tons of lighting no power with all trees down. Pink lighting is rare but very people see it. Nothing beats that storm system that came in 6 years ago just a roar constant lighting and heavy heavy rain like 4 inches.

The fireball blew me away. I was on HWY 12 and it was like a bomb was dropped.

There seems to be more and more storm anomalies occurring.

This happened a bit more than 24 hours ago in Wyoming, just 'feet' away from Old Faithful: [link to www.nps.gov (secure)]

It took out the camera pointing at Geyser Hill.

I don't take any storm for granted anymore. You might consider 'being ready' to try capturing anything amazing or crazy on camera.

Stay safe!

Never seen so many, usually we only see cloud to cloud..

Never seen pink lightning, but I had the experience of seeing ball lightning when I was a young teenager. Was in the hallway when lightning struck the farmhouse where I grew up. An orange ball about the size of a beach ball went floating down the hallway from the kitchen. So odd looking and crystal clear in it's definition. It actually had a small ball, about the size of a golf ball floating on it's surface. After a few seconds it disappeared with a large bang that was almost as loud as the primary strike a few seconds before.. Will never forget that. Scared the crap out of me.

Re: RE: Major Thunderstorms Tonight in Wisconsin.... Weird Lightning Though....
I forgot...the Yellowstone lightning looks pinkish, also.

As for the smell of sulphur, a few years back I took many photos of steam releases that glowed in blue hues, sometimes tinged toward purples. I've always considered the this was due to the heated gases of certain dissolved minerals being carried in the water flowing through the channels towards the geyser vents.

Maybe the gases creating this 'sulphur' smell burns hots in this spectrum.

I've also been hearing people talk about plasma lightning in recent months. I wonder if a 'super' charged atmospheric anomaly could also be at play here...perhaps being carried in from gases accumulated in clouds?

I can't say sulfur is what causes it, yet, there seems to be sulfur deposits in Wisconsin in a number of places. Perhaps the storm has picked up some of it?

Mineral Point, Iowa County, and in Lafayette County.  [link to wgnhs.uwex.edu (secure)]

Sulfur cycling in the water column of Little Rock Lake, Arbor Vitae, WI:  [link to link.springer.com (secure)]

Lessons from Little Rock Lake
An acid rain experiment on a small Wisconsin lake almost 25 years ago continues to teach us about consequences of air pollution, energy use and growth.

I also came across this pdf " Sulfur Bacteria Problems in Wells" published by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Bureau of Drinking Water & Groundwater
  [link to dnr.wi.gov]

Because there are many articles on sulfur grow lamps and plasma lamps, the results I found  muddled much of what I was quickly looking for...yet, when I looked at images, there were many photos of pink lightning -which was NOT- part of my search parameters. Unfortunately, these were merely links to stock photos, not to scientific articles.

Sulfur causes a blue flame, yet, I would not be surprised if super-heated plasma strikes caused some changes, perhaps depending on salts, or other substances mixed in the atmosphere.

Anyway, if you live anywhere near the places mentioned, that's probably why you smelled sulphur. If not, a quick search of sulphur deposits in your county or nearby ones, might solve the mystery.

Good luck! Stay safe.

pink orange and I think green, some areas had different colors.
It lasted 2 days

EQ coming in. It really feels like things are about to start shaking.
Pink lightening sounds amazing . Recently read that pink in the auroras was not a good thing. Wonder if the can be said about pink lightening.
your descriptions sounds amazing & scary at the same time.
