Instinct is the completely natural, spontaneous way of reacting which we have in common with the animals, and we must recognize that in certain circumstances it serves as a good guide. When human beings were still at a very primitive stage, closer to the animals, this was in fact their only guide. But thanks to the development of their brain, they have now attained a much higher level and have begun to develop other guides – reason and intelligence – which they must now follow. What was fitting in the past, therefore, proves to be ill-adapted to the present. Consider the example of fear, which for animals is a very good guide, and even indispensable. It is fear that instructs them and keeps them safe. Man, on the contrary, must learn to conquer fear, and the role of initiation is to give him the means to do this, until he conquers even the fear of death. How? With knowledge and love.
