Purity is the key to health, joy, knowledge, power and eternal life. When you purify yourself, the light enters you more easily. You begin to see more clearly, and as a result you acquire a better understanding of things. Unwholesome particles which are harmful to your health are driven out, and you become healthier. Those that impede your will are rejected, and you become stronger. All that is heavy and difficult leaves you, and you feel lighter and are overcome with joy. Just as impurity brings fermentation, disintegration and death in its wake, it is through purity that we gain eternal life. Immortality, joy, power, health and intelligence are merely different aspects of purity. Here you have a resume of initiatic Science, and it is up to you to find out if it is true.

Thankfulness, gratitude, has the power to cleanse the body, neutralize poisons and renew physical matter. So, learn to give thanks. Each day, several times a day, repeat, ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you…’ Why are humans so ungrateful – ungrateful towards the Lord, ungrateful towards nature, ungrateful towards one another? All they remember of their day-to-day life is what they didn’t have or didn’t like, so they do not see that there is much to be thankful for. And yet, there is an enormous amount to be thankful for. Disciples who want to progress on the path of evolution must learn gratitude, for that is what will one day give them the key to the transformation of matter. Try to really understand that, if you know how to give thanks, the nature of the elements composing your physical matter will be different, more sensitive, subtler and more resistant, and you will feel your psychic and even your physical organs doing better work.

The greatness of sacrifice lies in its ability to bring about transformation. It is worth your while to meditate on this subject! Even the most vile matter can be transformed. I have often demonstrated this for you with the example of the dead wood used to make a fire. Imagine that within you there is dead wood, old, useless branches, in other words, thoughts, feelings and desires which paralyze you and work against your evolution. You can sacrifice them to produce heat and light. Why consider sacrifice as something sad or painful? On the contrary, we must see sacrifice as something joyous: it brings us warmth, it brings us light, and what could be more joyous than light? Life is a process of combustion. To stay alive, we must constantly maintain the fire within us. This combustion is a physical phenomenon, but it is also a spiritual reality. Every day we must burn certain material within us in order to produce heat and light.

A master opens the doors, but it is the disciples who must enter; he will not force them. And when he sees that they are evolving, he opens new doors for them. Each time he notices that they have progressed, he reveals a higher level to them, but it is they who must surmount this challenge. Therefore, do not imagine that you can find a master who, by placing his hand on you or pronouncing a few magic formulas, will enlighten you. Enlightenment will never be anything but the fruit of your own work.

It is not enough to ask heaven to clarify something for you: if you fail to work on yourself, you will not receive a correct reply. Why? Because heaven's reply, in passing through all the opaque layers you have accumulated within you, will be distorted. In some very evolved beings that know how to orient their imagination, this screen receives and records many things that they then express and manifest. Later, we perceive that what they had thus 'imagined' was not pure invention on their part, but that they had captured realities which had not yet appeared on the physical plane. Those who know how to work on their thoughts and feelings succeed in purifying their mental body to such a degree that their imagination becomes clear - pure and transparent - and they begin to 'see'. At this level, imagination and vision are one.

Are there believers who do not dream of paradise? But, at the same time, they deny themselves entry by continuing to accumulate impurities within. Only those who work to regain their original purity will one day hear God himself say to them, ‘Come, come in and look.’ And what will they see? Bodies of light. In paradise, everyone is naked, clothed in light. The angels’ only clothing is light, for light is the very substance of their bodies. The ancient mysteries depicted the goddess Isis clothed in a veil, which only the great priests, the hierophants, were allowed to remove. This means that those who want to contemplate the Divinity must themselves be naked, that is, pure; otherwise, it will always remain veiled to them, and they will not succeed in discovering its secrets. As people gradually purify themselves, Isis unveils before them. Then they see, they understand, and all they experience is light and joy. That is true paradise.

Too many people launch into the practice of esotericism and occultism without having sought to purify their inner world, their thoughts and their feelings. And so they merely flounder in the lower layers of the astral plane and will never know the reality of the spiritual world. Even if, as is sometimes the case, they do possess true psychic gifts and powers, they need to know that this is not enough. For the psychic world is not the spiritual world, and it is not enough to have a psychic gift; you have to use it properly. The most gifted musicians and painters achieve nothing if they don't submit to a discipline, if they don't study under a master. An artistic gift has to be developed; the same goes for psychic gifts such as clairvoyance, mediumship and healing powers. To develop them, you have to work on the only quality that allows you to see things clearly and to exert a helpful influence; that quality is purity. And in this context, purity means not only being lucid but also being honest, disinterested and aware of your responsibilities.

I have told you so often to be wary of those books on occult science that pretend to open the way to the invisible world but will only lead you dangerously astray. If you ever want to be able to leave your body and astral travel, so as to discover the splendours of the spiritual world, here is an exercise that is completely safe. For example, on those mornings when a grey, misty sky makes you feel drowsy, instead of trying to concentrate and meditate – which is pointless, as the conditions aren’t right, and you won’t succeed – try to stop thinking. Allow your soul to expand into space, and imagine it is rejoining the universal Soul and fusing with it: it will bring back with it images of the regions it has been contemplating. But be under no illusion: the quality of what you see depends on you, on the nature and quality of your desires, your feelings and your thoughts. So, if you want to truly connect with the realities of the spiritual world, begin by purifying your inner world.

The Creator has given us a spirit and a body, but not with the intention that they co-exist as strangers, or even worse, as adversaries. A true spiritualist is one who learns to purify his physical body so that the spirit, finding a clear field, is gradually able to impregnate it with its quintessence to the point of becoming visible and tangible. Have we ever wondered what this work of God is, how He works, and in what way Jesus is associated with this work? The work of Christ is to purify everything, to harmonize and illuminate everything, and to orient everything toward the divine Source, so that the water of this Source can in return flow and bring to life the earth and all its creatures. Only someone who has managed to rise as far as the divine Spirit in order to imbue himself with its quintessence and then to distribute its benefits to all creatures, has earned the right to say ‘I am working.’

Matter always offers a certain degree of resistance. To shape it, it has to be subjected to a force that is able to make it malleable or even to dissolve it. Take clay for instance; when you pour water onto it, it becomes wet and softens as it dilutes. If you cover sugar or salt with water, they melt. Certain types of matter are fashioned by introducing something that penetrates, wets and softens. Others, like metal for instance, have to be subjected to heat. In the spiritual sphere, love is the equivalent to the water and heat that allow us to work on matter. Love, like heat and water, penetrates the particles of matter, melts them and transforms them. When you feel troubled, annoyed or anxious, you can change your state of mind with love, which purifies your psychic matter and harmonizes the particles. Until now you have known only impassioned love, which produces devastating effects. Try, from now on, to learn to work with the power of spiritual love, because it will sublimate your inner being.

Make an effort to feel the life that is everywhere in the universe and to commune with it, knowing that the sun manifests it in its greatest purity and intensity. In doing so, you create a new current in all the cells of your organs, which will begin to function more harmoniously. And by becoming more alive and expressive yourself, you will gradually attract the love and esteem of others, for it is life alone that people are looking for. Yes, it is a terrible truth. A woman adores her husband, but what does she do when he dies? Does she keep him with her? Since light is the very matter of creation, through meditation and concentration we are able to extract a few particles from all that exists around us to assimilate into our own substance. Of course, we find this light mainly in the sun, but also in the air and in all the foods we use to nourish ourselves each day. Once we have a little of this light, we have every possibility of increasing it. How? By allowing it to merge with divine light. Its strongest aspiration is to achieve such a fusion, but there is one condition: the path leading to divine light must be clear of all impurity. Impurities are what prevent fusion. By purifying ourselves, we gradually remove the obstacles that separate our light from the light of God, until one day our light and his light become one. And then nothing can ever part them.

Observe yourself: when you are dissatisfied with life and in pain, often it is not material changes that permit you to improve your inner state but rather changes in your thoughts and feelings. Of course, if you suffer physically, you will need physical remedies. If you have an injury or a broken leg, even the best thoughts and feelings will not heal you or remove the pain: it takes a lot of time for their influence to bring about improvements in matter. And if nature has succeeded in doing such magnificent work on certain minerals, in refining, purifying and colouring them, turning them into the marvels we admire today - crystals, diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, topazes, rubies, and so on - why would human beings not be capable of doing the same work within themselves? What are prayer and meditation? Precisely those activities that allow humans to purify and illumine everything within their heart and soul, until one day they become as limpid as a gemstone. Then, the Lord, who appreciates gemstones very much, will set them in his crown. It is an image, of course, but it corresponds absolutely to a reality.

At first sight, what is fine, delicate and subtle does not seem capable of resisting attack. But look at what happens in the different kingdoms of nature. Stones may seem to be the most resistant, but actually plants, thanks to the currents of life moving through them, know how to defend themselves better than stones, since they are alive, and animals even better than plants, since they are able to move about. As for humans, even though they are vulnerable on the physical plane, they all have the capacity on the psychic plane to escape difficult conditions. When they have learned to make use of their mind to work on their own matter, to refine and purify it, they will no longer be so much at the mercy of circumstances or of harmful forces and entities from the invisible world. High on the scale of beings are creatures that have purified their own matter and intensified their life to such a degree they have become elusive: they can be neither captured nor limited. And beyond all these creatures is God, the Creator, who is absolutely elusive, so much so that we cannot even conceive of him.

Bees draw nectar, a sugary liquid, from flowers, and from it they then make a delicious food – honey. In symbolic terms, this is what initiates do. Just as bees draw the nectar from flowers without ever damaging them, so initiates come to human beings to collect only their most spiritual quintessences. From these they prepare a delicious, fragrant food within their heart and soul, using their alchemical knowledge. So the bee is one of the symbols for the initiate. In each human soul, even those of the most deprived or abject, initiates will always be able to find a divine quintessence. And from all these quintessences they produce a honey that the heavenly entities also come and enjoy.

Do not try to fight against sexual energy, for not only will you be unable to overcome it, but it will get the better of you. The only way to control it is to find yourself an ally, a very powerful associate, towards whom you direct this force and to whom you devote it. Using alchemical knowledge, your ally will succeed in turning it into light, beauty and health. And who is this ally? A high ideal, a sublime idea you live with, cherishing and nurturing it. If you develop the habit of focusing all your energies on a divine ideal, instead of getting the better of you, they will serve you and help you realize your ideal.

Why do alchemists describe the transformation of matter in the Great Work as a sequence of colours? Because they have observed this sequence with vegetation. Think of fruit trees for example: apart from some nuances – for nature is rich in variety – they pass through a series of colours, and always in the same order. In winter, the trees are black and bare. In spring, they become white with flowers and green with leaves. Then comes summer, and the ripening fruits turn yellow and red. In autumn the foliage turns red and gold, and with red and gold the process is finished. It is the end of the cycle, as it is in the work of alchemy. Like vegetation, human beings must inwardly pass through all the phases of the alchemical process: they die, then they are reborn, resurrecting with new virtues and powers: new colours.

We automatically associate good with God. It isn’t like that; good, like evil, is only a servant of God. God is not what is good; he is infinitely more than that. So stop wondering why he allows evil to exist. God allows everything, and that is because he uses everything. And you too must understand how to use evil in the work you do, just like chemists, who discard nothing, because they know how to make use of all the products in their laboratory, even poisons – everything is needed in a laboratory. So we must model ourselves on the chemist. Since our inner laboratory contains both pure and impure, light and dark, elements that lift us up and others that drag us down, we should learn to use everything to achieve God’s plans. Be thankful that heaven created you just as you are, and set to work!

Whenever you experience a period of sadness or discouragement, do not think it is there to stay and nothing can be done about it. Such a state will not last, and already happiness is getting ready to visit you. But in the meantime, so as not to endure this state passively, tell yourself it is possible to make use of it for your inner work. Suffering is like the compost, even the manure, you place around flowers and shrubs to make them more vigorous and more beautiful. Yes, here we have yet another analogy between the psychic plane and the physical plane. And if you study how your psyche reacts to this or that prompting from your inner or outer world, you will see that it is possible to draw energy even from your negative states. What humans lack is knowledge of the subtleties of the inner life. There is a whole laboratory inside us, enabling us to research which elements allow us to have the right attitudes. It is impossible to just describe these elements theoretically; we must each find them for ourselves, by observing how the events of our daily life affect us.

Alchemists work mainly with three substances: sulphur, mercury and salt. But these are not the sulphur, mercury and salt we know, and alchemists explain their origin in the following way: sulphur was formed by fire acting on air, mercury by air acting on water, and salt by water acting on earth. Sulphur corresponds to the masculine, outgoing principle; mercury to the feminine, receptive principle, and salt is the result of their union - their child. Each is represented geometrically: sulphur by a triangle and cross, mercury by a moon and cross, and salt by a cross in a circle. Sulphur, mercury and salt are also symbols for the three worlds - the spiritual, psychic and physical. Sulphur is the symbol for the spirit, mercury for the soul, and salt for the physical body. When you possess the knowledge of these three substances - sulphur, mercury and salt - and also of the four elements - fire, air, water and earth - you will know the principles of true alchemical science.

It is not earth but water that symbolically represents matter, and alchemists speak of a substance they define as a water that doesn’t make things wet, the philosopher’s water, which has to be heated by fire. Many have interpreted this fire and this substance as the fire of the sun and the substance of the moon. This is why Hermes Trismegistus says with regard to the philosopher’s stone, ‘The sun is its father, the moon is its mother…’ – in other words, fire (spirit) is its father, and water (matter) is its mother. For just as the sun rules fire and man, so the moon rules the waters and woman. And since gold is linked to the sun and silver to the moon, this also explains the important place these two metals have in alchemical treatises. Disciples of an initiatic school are also alchemists: they work according to the same principles, but they transpose the sun and the moon, fire and matter, gold and silver into the psychic, spiritual domain. The two principles, fire and water, are wisdom and love: by working with these two principles they obtain the philosopher’s stone, the force that promotes action.

Alchemy is the science of the transformation of matter. In the crucible, the alchemist places the prima materia, the base matter, which, initially, dies and rots down; this operation corresponds to the colour black. Next, the matter is dissolved and purified and becomes white. Then come distillation and conjunction, where the matter turns red, and finally sublimation, where the colour turns to gold. These operations remain obscure for many and only become clear if they are interpreted as different stages of inner life. The work alchemists perform on the matter in the crucible is, in fact, the work of regeneration disciples perform in the crucible of their own body, a work to which they must devote their entire life. The regenerated matter comes out of the crucible transformed into gold: a regenerated human being has died to their lower nature and been born to their higher. Jesus said, ‘Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.’ This sentence can be taken as a summary of alchemical work.

The laboratories in which scientists carry out their research are wonderfully equipped, but you should know that nature gave all of us a personal laboratory at birth – ourself: our own body, psyche, heart, mind, soul and spirit. So, the experiments you can engage in are not just those outside of you; each of you can carry out research and make discoveries deep inside yourself as well, using your sensations, feelings and thoughts. Each of you must become aware that you possess an extraordinary laboratory within yourself; nothing is missing: all substances and elements are represented there, and you can work even better there than in the outer laboratories. Why? Because, despite technical progress, the instruments needed to discover all the elements that exist in nature have still not been successfully manufactured, whereas, within men and women, all the instruments and elements are already there at their disposal.

With the technical means now at their disposal, chemists are able to extract a great many elements from metals, minerals and plants which are then used in the manufacture of different products. And they will continue to penetrate more and more of nature’s secret treasures. They will discover that everything in existence is composed of elements endowed with particular properties that can benefit human beings. And don’t be surprised if I say that human beings are also ‘nature’. When you make the decision to enter the immense laboratory of your own being, you will find all the elements you need for your physical, psychic and spiritual development. There is nothing to prevent you from searching for these elements outside yourself, but never forget everything is inside you. You must make every effort to become conscious of and develop your inner wealth and power. Once you truly feel you carry all these elements within yourself, you will possess a treasure trove inside, which you will constantly be able to draw on.

Alchemists say that, in order to make gold, you must start with at least one atom of gold, as a seed, for nothing in nature can be produced without a seed. The alchemical process is therefore similar to the growth or reproduction of a seed. A grain of wheat begins by producing one ear of wheat, and then one day there’s a whole field! In the same way, for those who know the secret, a grain of gold can ‘multiply’ itself an infinite amount of times. We, too, possess this grain of gold, the divine seed given to us by the Creator. Now that he has given it to us, nothing and no one is able to take it away from us or make us lose it. But it’s up to us to become aware that this seed exists, to awaken it and bring it to life, until it finally develops into a tree… a temple… the New Jerusalem… the Christ Child… So many images and symbols have been used to interpret this reality! All human beings possess this seed, and once they know where and how to look for it so they can work with it, the words ‘life’ and ‘resurrection’ will really mean something to them.

Whatever your circumstances, get into the habit of going deep within yourself, in order to find that quintessence called love, wisdom, gentleness, goodness, peace, inspiration, purity and gratitude. Simple objects you hold in your hand can help to bring out what is hidden in the depths of your being: a bird’s feather, a leaf from a tree, a pebble… everything can become an intermediary, a means of getting in touch with your inner world. And even a word written on a piece of paper can also suffice: you write a word, and thanks to this single word you enter your inner laboratory, and you find the ‘flask’ that carries the same name. The word you have written is like a reference, a detector; you hold it in one hand while you look for the flask in the other and, as there is an affinity between this word and a particular flask, you will eventually find it. I will never tire of repeating this: there are so many things at your disposal, but only so long as you make the effort to use them!

Take a piece of sulphur: it is hard, solid. Now, heat it: it becomes soft, almost liquid. But if you continue to heat it, it will harden again. It is exceptional for a chemical substance to become solid again once it has softened, and it is interesting to find the correspondences between this phenomenon and our psychic life. In alchemical science, sulphur and mercury represent the two principles, masculine and feminine, in other words the intellect and heart. So, in sulphur’s transformation through the effects of heat, we see the different phases through which the human intellect passes when confronted with the question of religion and faith. Those whose intellect is undeveloped believe everything they are taught by religion without any discernment; they have what we call ‘blind faith’. But once they become more educated, they develop their critical faculty, and then doubt gradually creeps in, their convictions weaken and they lose their faith. However, if they continue their education and start to think more deeply about things, they will regain their faith, true faith, an unshakeable faith that is based on knowledge.

Everything that happens to us has meaning and value only if we are resolved to make good use of it. Then, even failure and disgrace can be transformed into precious stones, whereas success and honours will eventually turn against us if we do not know how to use them for the good. The Creator has given us everything we need to face all situations in life. He has equipped us with a kind of laboratory where we can go and work. Liquids, powders, gasses and the directions for their use are all there in our inner laboratory. Even the destitute, even reprobates and criminals possess all the elements necessary for their regeneration. They have accumulated so many obstacles in themselves that it is now very difficult to overcome them and enter this laboratory, but it is there inside them, and one day they will gain access to it.

Beyond the earth’s atmosphere, in what the ancients called the ether, there is an essential substance dispersed throughout space, and everything on earth is designed to attract and retain a certain quantity of this life-bearing substance. Scientists would do well to take up this matter and through laboratory research teach the public about the nature of this quintessence, since it is so necessary to our physical, psychic and spiritual health. The Hindus call this substance prana and have methods for capturing it, particularly by means of the breath. But there are many other methods besides respiration. There is the contemplation of the rising sun and of the starry night sky. There is contact with the forces of nature in the forests, mountains, rivers, lakes and oceans. There is also nutrition, since all the foods we eat contain something of this quintessence which is distributed everywhere in space, from the rocks to the stars.

Each month we see the moon wax and wane in the sky. The period of the waxing moon is favourable to start undertaking things, because according to the law of analogy that rules the universe, it is the time when the growth process is enhanced in the whole of nature. You can make your plans at any time, but once the decision is taken, its realisation must begin with the waxing moon; whereas to bring an undertaking to an end, it is best to choose the time when the moon is waning. If you would like to enhance your health or some quality, some virtue in you, in the first days of the waxing moon, after nightfall, look at the moon, raise your right hand and say, ‘Just as the moon is waxing in the heavens, may my whole being be filled with strength, love and light, so that I may become a true servant of God.’ Say this three times. As for the time of the waning moon, you can use it to work on particular faults you wish to correct – then you say the corresponding formula, which you also repeat three times with your hand raised.

It is difficult to improve oneself, and sometimes you find the results are not equal to the efforts you have made. But are you really using the methods I give you? There are many, but today I will just remind you of one. Talk to heaven, and say, ‘Now I understand; there is nothing I can do about my lower nature. It is stubborn, tough; I’ll never manage to change it. Yes, after all those wasted years, at last, heavenly spirits, I understand that I will get nowhere with it; it is not very bright; it is blind and malevolent. So, send me the purest, most perfect entities to take its place. Let these dwell in me, guide me, teach me and take over my whole life, so that I may succeed in realizing your plans, even in spite of myself.’ This is one of the best prayers in the world, and if you say it sincerely every day you cannot fail to experience good results.

A true spiritualist dedicates his life to heaven saying, 'From now on I will work for the kingdom of God. I will abandon all these futile occupations, all these passing pleasures that bring me nothing.' By doing this, he releases within himself spiritual energies that were paralyzed and enslaved by ordinary, everyday habits, and he can at last bear fruit.

Look at a tree: when it is invaded by insects and caterpillars, it cannot bear fruit, and we must rid it of its parasites with insecticides. In the same way, someone who gives in to laziness and the basest pleasures attracts parasites, dark entities of the astral world that come to nourish themselves through him. They invade his body, will, heart and intellect, they suck up the sap that should nourish his higher self. Yes, this is true: human beings shelter within themselves other beings that drain them of all their energy. To get rid of these parasites, they must dedicate their whole being, all their activities to heaven, and it is then that they will bear only succulent fruits.
