Re: NEW off grid living ideas !!!
I've never quite understood people that want to live off the grid yet have all the benefit of living on the grid. If people want to live off grid, just go live like the average person lived until 1930's in the backwoods. Maybe instead of a composting toliet, try the older and revolutionary technology of an outhouse and lye while wiping the old brown eye with wide and soft leaves.

Why would you head to Appalachians for a SHTF situation, it's beautiful country and doesn't need doom to be enjoyed. Just look at the web toed, six fingered locals, they've been up in those hills lovin their country and kin for eons. You git up thar in those rollin hills and add your bit of seed to get to fixin their family troubles.

Re: NEW off grid living ideas !!!
1) Don't care
2) Wow, really don't care
3) Why would you wait to move somewhere pretty to enjoy your life and instead live in a city where you are crowded by people, so let's break this 'benefit' of city living for you:

- probably up to your eyeballs in debt,
- fight traffic all day long,
- work a job you hate, when you can work a job you hate anywhere,
- much higher cost of living (hence the debt cycle)

Again...why would you wait to move somewhere you obviously love, versus where ever you are that's obviously making you crazy enough to plan for the end of the world. Not to point something out but if planning for teotwawki while remaining miserable in a city, in the meanwhile waiting for some sweet imaginary release of DOOOOOOOM. Right now it sounds like you fell off a turnip truck if you sitting around waiting for some largely imagined event.

Re: NEW off grid living ideas !!!
"The Grid" is anything that keeps you from self-sufficiency.

Got tools and knowledge to fix your own gear? You're off the grid in that respect.

Got solar or wind power generation? Maybe a generator? If you use what you make, you're off the grid.

Got a woodstove and means to cook and heat water with heat or a solar collector? You're off the grid.

Not something you can do in most cities or suburbs. Got deed restrictions? Probably a problem...

Composting toilets "work", but so does a septic tank. Septic system is more accepted in rural areas.

Got a well?, Maybe a cistern and metal roof with gutter system? All sorts of ways to get water.

Grow your own food? Raise rabbits and chickens?

New ideas? The "tiny home" thing is shit; not The Shit, just overpriced and shitty. Get a paslode butane powered nailgun and a portable generator to run a chop saw and make your own from stick lumber and T-111 on site. Same flatbed truck that will charge you hundreds to deliver your shack can bring building materials to your site. Only your lumberyard will deliver for free (on a good order).

It ain't rocket science to put up a small building. Use 2x8s for studs and joists, Treated for base frame. Maybe just build a super-duper foundation and then put a Yurt up?

Surplus GI tents with liners and chimney holes are cheap. Build that good foundation, put flooring in on a removable grid, use a couple of woodstoves with water jackets and you are set!

Build a barn maybe, park an RV or trailer in the barn.
Metal buildings go up in one day once the foundation is done. Park RV in their and make your space what you want it to be. Avoid big property tax.

Buy a teardown out in the country and get a well, septic, and maybe good foundation to build on. Salvage materials too, or maybe just renovate roof and exterior? Add insulation and you're good.

Having mobility is a good thing, or will be in the future.

learn what you can do with solar and battery/inverter systems NOW.

Self-sufficiency is in your best interest...

Re: NEW off grid living ideas !!!
I based my cabin on the idea of those portable sheds, but figured that I could most likely build it myself for far cheaper than buying it outright. I was able to do about 80% of the framing and then farmed out for contractors between jobs that were willing to work for cash to do what I could not do. Same thing for the electrical and plumbing. I did what I could, and got help with the rest. Even having to pay somebody else to help me with some things, the whole structure, dryed in, wired for electric, and plumbed, came in thousands of dollars cheaper than buying a pre-built shed with nothing else done to it.

You are lucky, so many folks that I know are seriously worried because of the huge increases in their property tax. Mine went from $98.00 per year for the past decade to $1297.00 this year. That is a huge jump in the cost of ownership

Silly as it may sound, I figured out how to do the overwhelming majority of the work I did on the cabin by looking through the old, old, old set of Time Life books I inherited from my folks. Those books made learning how to do a lot of the stuff pretty dang easy. The only real excess learning I had to do was check the modern codes to see what had changed and adjust my plans accordingly, and really the only thing I really had to change from the way it was explained in the Time Life books was the way to do the vent stack for the plumbing. BFD.
