Nutritional experts. Am I likely to die if I continue to severely restrict my calorie intake?
Had no carbs for 6 weeks, and some days I don't eat, other days I have some morsels of protein and take multi vitamin tablets.

Weight is starting to come off me, and the only side effects so far have been the occasional heart palpation, slight headache, but now I'm starting to get diarrhea. Apart from that I have lots of energy and feel in good spirits.

I've heard you can only go a month before your body starts cannibalizing itself to survive, but surely it will convert fat into energy before it does this, no? I mean, isn't that what fat is mainly for?

Advice please.

P.S. Thought I'd also add, I'm not working ATM, so been generally relaxing for six weeks, and just doing a 2 mile bike ride every other day. I'm putting this out there so other people, who live active lifestyles, don't decide to copy me.

Why on God's green earth you expect positive results from self starvation is effing crazy.

Need some attention?

How tall are you and how much do you currently weigh?

And are you male or female?

But why is that? Fat is a reserve form of energy, so surely muscles / organs will convert it into ATP.

I see no muscle wasting so far. not even any gauntness in my face.

Nah, I cannot lose weight any other way than fasting / starving. I've tried and it takes forever for even minor results. I was even doing muscle training / cardio for two hours everyday for 7 months, and lost a mere 7lbs.

I'm male, 6ft 1" and weighed 245 lbs. I don't have any scales right now, but I can see that weight has dropped off me. I just don't know how much at this point.

Technically you could survive for 40 days or more on water alone depending on how fat you are. I went 9 days on water alone before. Just eating low calories on a daily basis will slow your metabolism though and eventually kill you when you run out of body fat to use. You don't want to go below 1500 calories a day as a guy. Lose weight slowly with a 500 calorie deficit per day or just pick a few days a week to fast while eating normally the other days.

Cheers for feedback. No slowing of metabolism yet (in fact more energy than carb diets), but I don't want to get foolish, start working out, then experience heart failure.

I still have plenty of fat reserves to fuel my organs and muscles, so I'll keep going, and if I experience any bad side effects, then I'll immediately stop.

If I was working a full time job ATM, I doubt my body could produce enough ATP from fatty acids alone, and this would likely cause me to drop dead from heart / organ failure. BUT as mentioned, I'm not working now, and have been chilling for six weeks, so I guess ketosis isn't so dangerous under such circumstances.

Look for info on Keto diet, low carb-high fat. It makes your body a fat burning machine. I have been trying to lose ten pounds for years and this finally worked for me without adding any additional exercise.

Not necessarily. The liver will make the glycogen needed for the midbrain. Every other part of the brain and body runs quite happily on Ketones.

Problem is that people do not know to have undergoing problem can get sudden critical reactions and die.

Are you checking your ketones, bilirubine?

I forgot to mention this, I am experiencing some slight shortage of breath. Isn't this a build up of carbon dioxide caused by fat burning? I read that once fat has been burned up, it is converted into C02 and we breath it out. Is this disturbing the respiratory cycle?

Very interesting. Thanks for this, and confirms what I assumed - that the body will feed on fat before cannibalizing itself.

You will not lose muscle for energy as long as there is any fat on you. And keep in mind your organs have local fat reserves you never see, even when they're healthy.

You will however lose muscle rapidly if you do not use it, because they are expensive to maintain in terms of energy.

You will be fine, keep being cautious, and make sure your electrolytes are kept in check. If you are getting heart palpitations check with a doctor.

IF, and I stress IF, you put yourself on an honest 2400 calorie per day diet. Honest means you count everything you put in your mouth...you'll settle at 200 pounds within 12 months.

What you're doing is tricking your metabolism now and it is not sustainable.

you have to stop, this is extremely dangerous

be happy with what you've lost so far and just manage your carbs properly

you are pretty much working the shit out of your liver and kidneys and they don't make the symptoms obvious when they are super stressed and about to be damaged, lay off them and just eat wisely

OP you're doing it all wrong.

Lose the fucking scale it doesn't mean shit. Muscle weighs more than fat. So even though you don't see the scale moving at first doesn't mean you aren't getting in better shape.

As you starve yourself your metabolism will slow down, that's not what you want to happen. You want to kick your metabolism into high gear.
While you starve yourself your body will cannibalize muscle and fat. You want to lose the fat and gain muscle. The more muscle you have the easier it will become to lose the fat.
We do not learn from history because our studies are brief and prejudiced. In a surprising manner, 250 years emerges as the average length of national greatness. This average has not varied for 3,000years. The stages of the rise and fall of great nations seem to be:
The Age of Pioneers , The Age of Conquests ,The Age of Commerce ,The Age of Affluence ,The Age of Intellect ,The Age of Decadence.
Decadence is marked by: Defensiveness, Pessimism, Materialism,Frivolity An influx of foreigners The Welfare State A weakening of religion. Decadence is due to: Too long a period of wealth and power, Selfishness Love of money ,The loss of a sense of duty.
The life histories of great states are amazingly similar, and are due to internal factors. Their falls are diverse, because they are largely the result of external causes. - Sir John Glubb The Fate of Empires
We are at the end of the Age of Decadence heading into COLLAPSE

Re: Nutritional experts. Am I likely to die if I continue to severely restrict my calorie intake?
Hello OP:

You are not talking about how tall you are, how much you weight, your age, or whether you are a man or a woman. That being said...

Lift weights if you are fasting. That will keep your muscle. Then your body will burn the fat for fuel until your body fat turns dangerously low (4% for men, 15% for women). Once you reach these levels, stop the fast.

You can follow a keto diet (very low amount of carbs: that is, 50 g or less per day), which will burn fat quickly, although not as quickly as if you don't eat anything.

Make sure your calories are at maintenance or slightly below it if you are following keto or any other diet.

I currently eat once a day and my carbs are relatively low (about 100 g of carbs a day). I have done longer fasts and eaten keto from time to time.

Peace.
