OP, while you are here, why do you make threads and edit titles with breaking news thousands of pages into the thread?
Are you trying to compensate?

Paw Paw- The Strongest Anti-Cancer Plant?
As if those aren’t enough, Paw Paw bark may be of the strongest anti-cancer substances out there, sharing similar traits to the now-famous, exotic South American Graviola tree leaves and twigs (the tree that produces the Soursop fruit). In fact, a large-scale Purdue University study found that it had the strongest anti-cancer abilities of any such fruit/plant on the North and South American continents, even more than soursop/graviola in vitro.

Two studies published in 1997 by a Purdue University researcher Dr. Jerry McLaughlin, who has published more than 330 scientific papers and secured several patents for his work, and a doctoral student, and found that compounds in the bark of the tree showed preliminary success in fighting against drug-resistant cancers.

“The Paw Paw compounds are not only effective in killing tumors that have proven resistant to anti-cancer agents, but they also seem to have a special affinity for such resistant cells,” an article on the Purdue News website noted.

Over 40 anti-cancer compounds were found in Paw Paw bark, although McLaughlin noted that cancer cells are very complex and difficult to kill in humans. A follow-up study was undertaken, but not enough has been done as of yet to determine the ultimate effects in humans.

One heck of an awesome thread, Luisport! Wish I could give you all ten of my greens.

If my computer weren't so screwed up, I'd watch all the videos, too.
Yes, I did cure my Stage 4 cancer in two weeks when I was 48. I also reversed my chronic kidney disease (glomerulonephritis) when I was 25. In neither case were any medical treatments involved.

They grow in south east ohio among other places

I have always wanted to try them but they rot so fast
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75131117

You might try getting a negative ion disk and put the pawpaw in the refrigerator. By poutting the disk in the refrigerator the negative ions can double the length of time food stays fresh.

I got one on Etsy that has a 7K rating. Got three actually. Going to order three more once my computer problems are cleared up. It's called Quantum BioPhysics.

Put the same disk on an injured knee that was acting up last night when I was trying to sleep. It improved the situation from "Damn, that hurts" to a much milder twinge.

Paw Paws are not Papayas!

I have some paw paw trees. They are indigenous to this area (SE US). They grow in patches of trees (paw paw patch) near water, like creeks.

I planted 6 Paw Paw trees in my yard (Dayton Oh) in 2013 and finally had fruit set on one tree this year... if I can get 2 fruit to last till September it will be my first crop!!

Not easy to get started and won't produce for at least 7 years and can't replant after about 3 years due to tap root, etc, etc. BUT way worth the effort!

Look for the Paw Paw festival in Ohio in September, it's unique...

You are very lucky! I love to go to paw paw festival it should be fantastic!

September 15th to the 17th. Come early and stay late. There's camping available too. Every year it gets bigger, and is very popular. There are hourly shuttles from Athens to the festival, near Albany. Cheap way to get from the Columbus International airport to Athens would probably be the GoBus.

Lots of things to do, look at, and sample in the way of pawpaws. Live music. More than several micro-brewers supply different recipes of pawpaw beer on tap at the beer tent. For those who don't drink alcohol, two recipes of pawpaw soda pop were on tap last year. There is a pawpaw eating contest, classes to learn how to grow pawpaws, and a pawpaw bake-off. Mamerto does the Atlatl demonstration and practice. Snowville Creamery makes and sells pawpaw ice-cream, on the site, and offers free samples of all their Grass-Grazed, Non-GMO, A2/A2 Dairy Products.

We had one when we moved in here - actually two but one was seak looking and we removed it...and never got more than one or two small fruits...

Then I let some of the suckers grow...and some got over 3 feet tall ...and last year our crop was MUCH BIGGER...apparently this fruit needs TWO TREES to cross pollinate like a lot of others.

I have 9 in pots growing to transplant ...and another dozen suckers getting over 3 feet tall...going to take with me to some land I have and plant a PAW PAW PLANTATION!!!

We don't have paw paw, but it's easy to get soursop/graviola, which is called "guanábana" here.

We also have cassava/manioc, which is called "yuca" here, and it's high in "vitamin" B17, the substance in apricot seeds.

Finding ripe Paw Paw fruit in the wild is extremely difficult as it's a favorite of many animals. I looked for years before finding any despite knowing where the trees already were. They like moist soil and tend to grow profusely in flood plain areas partially shaded by larger trees. They are the only tree in NA that flowers in winter.

It grows wild on my in-laws property in WV. The animals do get to it.

Re: PAW PAW FRUIT THREAD: Asimina Triloba - The Strongest Anti-Cancer Plant is from US!
I've got 7-8 fruiting pawpaws. Possums and raccoons wiped out my fruit last year, though.

They do not bloom in winter, but they do bloom in early spring. They bloom before the leaves emerge. Trees are not male or female, but the flowers do start out female and then turn male. This is so that the tree cannot pollenate itself. The flowers are not terribly attractive to pollinators, so some people hang road-kill in the tress to encourage flies and other insects. Hand pollinating is easy and very doable.

There are a number of good varieties, some mentioned here (Peterson varieties, mango, sunflower, etc).

Trees should be transplanted in early spring, if digging up plants, meant until leaves start to emerge. Taproots are hard to dig up, but saving the whole root isn't necessary, or even frequently possible.

Skins, stems and leaves are not to be eaten and some people have developed Parkinson's like symptoms from excessively eating these parts.

The Pawpaw tree is the host of the swallowtail butterfly.m during fall it turns a lovely buttery yellow color. Besides the caterpillars and the previously mentioned possums and raccoons the tree has no real pest issues.

Fruit ranges from a few ounces to well over a pound and 1.5 pound fruits are not unheard of. The fruit grows in clusters called hands and can be identified as ripe by feel and/or smell. Individual trees may have fruit which is creamy white, yellow or even orange. The more orange the fruit the more citrus-y the flavor.

I prefer the more orange fruits (Mango variety for instance).

Chilled pawpaw was a colonial favorite. Lewis and Clark enjoyed the fruit along with biscuits or bread.

Cooking the fruit tends to reduce the flavor.

Pawpaws graft well using whip and tongue or cleft grafting. New grafts must be protected from direct sunlight for the first year, but do well thereafter.

They are among my favorite fruits here in Michigan.

they will be ripening in August here...shake tree and they Fall...but chipmunks often beat us to them...do NOT wait until they are on the ground...but you can't really ripen them nicely after picked (possible on the windowsill)
...so careful selection required.

Best way we like to eat them is scooping out of skin and using mixed slices on top of vanilla ice cream
