The Germans came so very close to defeating the Soviets defended Stalingrad, Moscow, and Leningrad.

But in the end, the desperation and courage of the Russians -- knowing defeat would mean probable death, the destruction of their homeland, subjugation to an occupying foreign power, etc. -- prevailed.

You might have forgotten that the US contributed much of the machinery that allowed the Soviet war machine to prevail, as did the Political Commissars penchant for shooting anyone who retreated towards them waiting in the rear, naturally.

Quite a difference between shipping military hardware to the Soviets, and actually facing hundreds of divisions of a Wehrmacht onslaught upon your homeland.

Oh please the krauts, Especially the SS couldnt even eliminate the Polish resistance fighters. They couldn't even defend an entire coastal front when they knew the allies here close to doing something. They couldn't handle fighting against Soviet troops at the eastern front... all they had to do was take Stalingrad...that's it, war would've been over for the soviets.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75220909

Hitler was Germany's worst enemy, there's no mistake about that. But that doesn't change the fact that the Wehrmacht was the greatest fighting force that ever existed, for they took on the Allies and the Russian Bear at the same time, and nearly won had it not been for Hitler's mental illness:

Funny don't you know about the Rzev battles?
 Quoting: embu 69548340

I was thinking about Rzev as well. Some here might want to research Rzev. All you ever hear about are the battles of Moscow and St. Petersburg (Stalingrad). The Russians came very close to losing that war. It is true that sheer force of will and ~15,000,000 Russian soldier deaths saved the day. It is also true that America provided a metaphorical mountain of war materiel to Russia. Everything from thousands of Studebaker trucks to P-39 Air Cobras to food to everything in between. Had Russia not been given this aid, the outcome could have well been different. Someone upthread mentioned that Germany never produced 4-engine bombers; had Germany produced 4-engine bombers and used them against Russian factories that had been hastily moved east, the outcome would have been different. There seems to be a fair amount of adulation for Hitler upthread as well. Had Hitler died before he attacked Poland, he might have gone down in history as one of the greatest politicians that ever lived. Let's be clear here; Hitler and his posse of nazis were totalitarian leftist fuckfaces. A good portion of the wehrmacht despised Hitler and his nazi party, probably even more do due to his egomaniacal meddling with regard to the eastern front.
 Quoting: MorbidlyFascinating 72929749

Germany had created the 4 engine bomber but it was never mass produced.
Remember that the US has single states larger than Germany.

The resources to produce and fly such aircraft were simply not available. I don't think it made any real difference in the end, it was simply a bridge too far for a relatively small country against the combined productivity and manpower of the US.
Germany, no matter what the politics were, was out-recourced and they ran out of other countries to loot for them.
In the end they literally ran out of fuel to run their machine and men to use them due to attrition.

Why -- in Winston Churchill's 6-volume history of World War 2 written between 1948 and 1953 -- were death camps never mentioned?

Why do you say Germany "failed" in the "Battle of Britain"?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71044287

Well.... they were unable to gain the air superiority necessary for Operation Sea Lion, the invasion of the UK. So they failed. They were unable to bomb the UK into a peace treaty preventing them from securing the western front before turning east for the invasion of the Soviet Union preventing a 2 front war. So they failed. They lost almost 2,000 aircraft and more than 3,000 aircrew that were needed later in 1941 against the Soviet Union. They failed.

Here's a question...

Why -- in Winston Churchill's 6-volume history of World War 2 written between 1948 and 1953 -- were death camps never mentioned? Surely something as grotesquely barbaric, politically earth-shattering, the purported attempted extermination of God's chosen people from whom our own religion -- Christianity -- was born.... Surely that would warrant 1 page. Maybe 2? At least a paragraph, no?

That isn't really true. The US provided huge numbers of trucks and jeeps along with some tanks and planes and other supplies. But the Germans had already lost by the time much of this material had arrived in the Soviet Union. The Red Army held off the Wehrmacht in 1941 without US equipment and in the end had to retreat from Moscow. And after 1941 Germany had lost. Oh, Germany was still winning at the time, but it had become a war of attrition and Germany could never win that. Many of Germany's top generals said after the war they knew they had lost after they failed to take Moscow. If the US hadn't supplied equipment to the Soviets through Lend Lease it would have taken the Soviets longer to recapture their territory and push the Wehrmacht back to Germany... but it was inevitable.

Germany almost beat the Soviet Union at the Battles of Moscow, Stalingrad, Kursk, etc. But they didn't, they came in second.

Even though it's true that Germany was to lose in a war of attrition with the Soviets, they also sought to buy time in their measured retreat for the new technology they were developing -- the V-2 rocket, for example -- the most innovative advancement of the war; only second, of course, to the nuclear bombs.

Britain had been knocked out of the war after Dunkirk. They were totally unable to mount any type of invasion of Continental Europe and wouldn't for years. After Dunkirk Germany was free to turn East.

But they didn't. They built barges and landing craft, massed divisions of troops on the coast and engaged in an air war that cost them large numbers of planes and personnel. And when they called off the attacks the British were stronger than when they started.

Personally I don't see a scenario where Germany's year long air campaign against the UK isn't seen as a failure no mater what we consider to be the goal.

[link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

The French navy surrendered with France but its ships were still under french command.

Churchill tried to scare Roosevelt into the war by saying that if German took those ships and conquered England and then took its ships,Germany could sail to America and bring the war to them.

Roosevelt's reply was that it would be better to not enter the war but to prepare if Germany was to attack America.

Churchill then wanted to prove Britain's will of winner the war by attacking its own Allie.

The French Admiral promised that no German would ever use a French ship and would have scuttled them if they tried.

That didn't satisfy Churchill's blood lust.

the merciful Hitler's Luftwaffe bombed and sunk a large portion of the Allied ships evacuating Dunkirk. Oh, and about Stalingrad - this military genius re-directed his forces southward to the Caususus with intentions of invading India. He was either a nutter, or he wanted to lose the war. For a more revealing possible explanation, look up the account of Rommel's meeting with Hitler around that time (it's supernatural).

You know for a fact that was their objective? Not to simply knock Britain out of the war long enough for Germany to turn back to the East and deal with the Soviet Union -- their primary existential rival?

NOBODY goes to war to simply knock the wind out of someone because payback is a bitch.

YOu make war to completely destroy the enemys will to fight.

There is no other reason and no other success.

Yes, Hitler failed and turned against the USSR, Hitlers ally by treaty in the invasion of Poland, which is a serious oversight on the part of all of you supposed experts.

Of course they do. The Japanese did so at Pearl Harbor. That's exactly what they did. But they miscalculated. But that's nonetheless exactly what they did -- attempt to knock out the U.S. Pacific Fleet, giving them (the Japanese) enough time to continue their imperialism throughout the Pacific.

No shame in not having a response. The shame is when you've been proven wrong with examples and you feign patronizing exasperation. :)
