The Krauts paused because they were stunned by their own great success. It might have been prudent, but as history would have it, it now appears to have been a significant mistake.
Bottom line; the French and British folded like a wet dishrag, and the Germans were not fully prepared to exploit that outcome.

Again, the Germans simply could not deal with how quickly the French and British defenses were overcome. That's a nice way of saying that they humiliated the French and British to a point that the Nazi's themselves were not prepared to exploit the situation to the fullest advantage, which could have, indeed, shaped the outcome of the war. I agree that the Germans would not have massacred the defeated armies.
