November 8, 2016 was a REAL good day, if I remember correctly!

EMP was a threat during the cold war. The first test was in 1962 i believe so the western militaries can handle that no problem.

Civilian life will ofcourse be affected.

In 2011 the Defense Science Board published a report about the ongoing efforts to defend critical military and civilian systems against EMP and other nuclear weapons effects.

They have been working on this.

EMP is a subject fraught with speculation, poor information, and way too many ulterior motives.

Because of the equipment my company builds, it is often a matter of discussion and research for me and my team.

I can tell you that the threat is absolutely real. The technology is not new, and it has been refined over the decades, by all nuclear powers.

To be an effective EMP weapon, a nuke is 'tuned' to create the desired RF radiation over the desired frequencies. It is also detonated at a high altitude to increase the 'footprint' or radiated area of the EMP.

Ironically, this mean that the EMP detonation would leave infrastructure and living things largely unaffected. Unlike a ground burst, which throws radioactive debris high into the air to then become lethal fallout.

This preservation of infrastructure and organic material is part of what makes an EMP tempting to an enemy. Set off the EMP, let society rip itself apart, then occupy the area and sweep up the small portion of survivors.

That said, I agree with many posters that to do such a thing to the USA would be tantamount to national suicide.

UNLESS the nuke(s) were launched from sea and the responsible party remained unknown. My concern is that North Korea will be the assumed culprit, regardless of which hidden hand actually was responsible for an EMP attack on CONUS.

An EMP attack on the USA does not have to be done very well to have staggering consequences.
