I've seen the same things happen in discussions about Roundup and GMOs. Including posts on Snopes, trying to debunk the harm it causes. Monsanto even made this huge effort to reach out to social media, doing this whole wholesome looking forks and knives shit post splatter across the internet saying they wanted to invite rational discussion on the topic. Of course, they lost in the end. GMOs are being banned everywhere. Roundup is too. On and on. Same shit happens over vaccine discussions, the discussions on high fructose corn syrup, discussions about the dangers of certain pharmaceutical drugs and so on. The most interesting thing ya gotta look out for is when they themselves post some crazy wacko theory about GMOs or whatever so they can shoot it down with "science." It's a method of "reframing" the argument. Then when someone brings up one of the billions of rational arguments about it, they call those people conspiracy theorists and throw them into the same pile as the wackos. "Don't look at the rats crawling with tumors! The FDA approved it! You're fine!" and blah blah blah. It's the oldest trick in the book, and used to create ingroup/outgroup bias to affect social norms and conversations through groupthink. A lot of ACs and even a few paid accounts on this site do it too. And most importantly, most educated people are becoming wise to this shit and aren't falling for it any more. ;) |
