The Presidents son was not being protectedby secret service?

Bad , very bad. Imagine this happening to any other Presidents son. Any other family member of any other President has always been under heavy protection from secret service. Think about it. So what's different here? They are distancing themselves from what they perceive as a scandal. It is not. The security officers on duty that day should all be fired including including their superiors.
