Actually, such a concept is not unreasonable. You could think about some kind of balloon or dirigible, but you would need to worry about atmosphere dragging you around with it. With the right adaptive aerodynamic design it would be possible to use the air currents for lift while defeating unwanted drift with some limitations. Of course if you made it above the thickest parts of the atmosphere then such complications would be minimized. At stratospheric elevations it would be possible to achieve mostly stationary position and descend once the planet has rotated to the position you want. It would probably be considerably cheaper than aircraft travel but would take longer. The trip to altitude being the significant time factor.

Yes sir, just invent a craft to go up and wait for it to get to where your going, that the ticket. Not flying to it, let the world just spin to the place. Yes, take into the account the spin of the spin and then you can calculate the decent time. Don't got to high time different and that has to be calculated too.

Well so people currently think that the moment you leave the ground you are affected by the planets rotation and gravitational fields
Which is how they claim a plane flying at 500 mph manages to arrive at its destination when flying with the earth's rotation at 1040mph/kph don't remember which.

However under these principles a ball thrown 90 degrees into the air that takes 60 seconds to travel up and down that is affected the same way should land 7.8 miles away yet it doesnt.

Also any plane flying against the rotation of the planet is also pulled around by planetery rotation which is moving at 1040mph/kmh in the opposite direction yet your plane only flies at around 500 but you still get there .?

To extend on this it means. you are landing on an east-west runway in the states after flying from Europe ........science says you will make it even tho the rotation of the planet is faster than you ....realistically the plane would need to hit 1200 mph in order to have a 160 mph landing speed as the planets pulling you at 1040 in the opposite direction and at touchdown you would crash

There are many more examples but takes forever on my phone

Ok, I'm going to throw this question out to you, knowingly knowing you can't answer it. If the earth is rotating counter clockwise at 1000 miles per hour, why is it that an airplane going 500mph doesn't take 1/2 the time to go one way and double the time to go the opposite direction. All the times for flights are exactly the same, wether they go against the spin of the planet, or with.

Now if you're going to answer, the question with the answer, everything spins together then it would be impossible for an airplane to go against the spin of the planet unless it was exceeding 1000 miles per hour, no commercial plane goes over 800-900 miles per hour at maximum.

This literally can't be explained, by a globe earther it just can't and it is literally the defining test that proves we're on a plane, that doesn't spin, or move.

THEN you get to explain jet streams, and how we have wind that comes out of the south and then the north and from west to east and east to west. If we were spinning on a ball the only direction wind would come from, would literally be the west.

The air is also roughly the same speed with local variations that is why you have to get above the thicker layers and slow one's speed relative to the spin of the earth to zero while staying buoyant, that is opposed to orbiting which would involve lateral relative motion.

Re: If the earth is spinning why do we need so many planes?
Omg I cannot believe after two pages no one has given you the actual answer. I will give it to you though. It is a very good question by the way and everyone should keep asking these very good questions as it seems very intuitive, that if you jumped the earth would travel under your feet if you are moving or if you took off going against the spin of the earth it would be more difficult then taking off with the speed of the earth. All of these examples would be true if the earth was accelerating and gaining velocity. However once a steady velocity is reached you gain what is called an inertial reference frame.

This is why when you are in an airplane flying at 600 mph you can get up and walk to the bathroom either direction and you it isn't more difficult or easy either way.

The entire basis of the theory of relativity at least from Einstein was that he theorized that if there was nothing moving around you in pure space, and you were moving at a constant speed in a vacuum you would have no way of knowing that. This came as a rebuttals to the Michaelson moorley experiments which gave some confusing results which seemed to indicate the earth was not moving...

The part that gates really weird with inertial reference frames is that no matter what your actual speed is light never seems to change speed. Even if you were traveling at near light speed yourself, the light in your immediate reference appears to move normal. It's everything outside that starts to melt like like time and matter.. I guess that's the reason why energy = mass times the speed of light squared because you have to add up both the observers light and your light to understand the energy created. Might have been more adequate to say something like time is dived by the energy divided by the speed of light squared.. I don't know that's where I still get lost. Thank you for posting a great question!'

Re: If the earth is spinning why do we need so many planes?
When you jump up, you have a velocity which is the velocity you had while spinning along with the earth.

Having a velocity while being pulled by a constant force results in a cyclic motion. In this case, earth's gravity is pulling on you.
Also, your path on this cyclic motion with the velocity you had before the jump eventually puts you back onto earth.

Another problem is that the atmosphere is both pushing you down and dragging you along towards the earth rotation.
It's actually rather complex.

But let's assume earth had no atmosphere. In such a case, you could have a catapult that would shoot you into the opposing direction of the earth's rotation just a few meters above earth with the perfect velocity such that you would stay always a few meters above the ground.
Unless my thinking went wrong, you could then actually use this as a means of travelling as far as you want around earth, just by waiting long enough.

Again, if my imagination does not fail me, one could imagine building a huge vacuum tube going all around earth, then accelerating things inside that tube in the opposite direction of earth's rotation just to the right velocity, such that the orbit is exactly within that vacuum ring/tube around earth.
That would be quite a low energy transportation method.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75240183

We have hovercars. We call them things like helicopters and drones. The question is how long can you power them with our primitive battery technology?

Gravity is relative. You have lots of friction with the atmosphere so you move relative to the atmosphere and ground around you. You have relatively no friction with the galatic center so even though you are moving fast comparatively you would never notice because relative speeds don't matter until there is some interaction.

Sure you could lift yourself off the ground and pop back down when you get where you need to be, in fact this is how we theorize advanced spacecraft would exceed the speed of light by essentially moving the universe around them. The real question is where are you going to get the energy to constantly apply those forces to keep you off the ground and resisting the movement of the air around you.

I have often said on here I am not a mathematician it leave it to them to figure out, the idea is a joke, but what I said is a was not fake, you do have figure all these facts to get the right answers.

You know what they say about the speed of earth but, they do not say much about if you are. They had a problem with this when they first had high flying Jets, they had to communicate so in sink was important.

I read a lot of things, and this fascinated me, has to do with how high you would have to be to really have different time forward I would guess, do you understand the fascination, time travel, it would be time travel. This is the closest I can think of to time travel. If you are just a five minute lag time, and you have instruments to record on earth somehow, you would know five minutes before it happened here, now if you had more time, well you understand why it fascinating to me. Time travel, not what people think the time lessons the farther away from earth you go.

Like I said, I am not a mathematicians, who are fascinated by numbers. It theories, only pattern in everything, that I see not numbers, unless they turn into a repeated patterns.
Sorry I got a headache

I will take a crack at it. Think of the flow of a river going around the earth along with the earth spin. Going east you are flowing along with the river but the ground is flowing along too. Going west the flow is retarding your motion but the earth is moving faster under you. The effects cancel each other. At least at which point the flow of atmosphere can be negated. North and south motion is not greatly effected.

We spin at the same speed/which you already know/which is why we use airplanes

The earth sound, the atmosphere doesn't, does it?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75240183

The atmosphere spins just as fast as the Earth at below 40000 ft; otherwise the wind on surface would have been 40 km/sec at equator.

Correction: only about 1675 kh/hr or 1000 mph wind speed if the atmosphere didnt follow so well with the Earth's rotation
