Anonymous Coward User ID: 73080747 United States 07/20/2017 04:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I've been ridinig for approximately 35 years and had numerous bikes. One of which was a Harley. I won't own another Harley. What I've noticed is if a person likes to ride often (i.e., ride more on your motorcycle than you do on four wheels), the person will own anything but a Harley. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73080747 There is indeed more to riding than horsepower. Suspension, enginieering, reliability, handling, maintenance intervals, braking, safety and virtually anything else attached to motorcycling are all better addressed through almost every other motorcycle company in the world than Harley except one-- nostalgia. Only perhaps Indian has that emotional, long-term attachment, but not as widespread, as Harley-Davidison. Those long term potential consumers are dying off. As I tell many folks who ask, "Why don't you ride Harley?" "Look, a Harley is good for what it is. A recreational vehicle only you take out when you have time and the weather is nice to enjoy your experience, like a 1955 Chevrolet Bel-Air. And like a 1955 Bel-Air, it doesn't hold a candle to any new vehicle on the road except in a nostalgic, emotional way. But if you have to drive often, or depend upon it at all, and wish to remain safe while having a better experience and greater ability, you drive and ride something else." Wtf are you even talking about? Which bikes are safer than a Harley? What is undependable about a Harley? Seriously doubt you could have that much of a better riding experience than a Harley. Why don't you ride one, before making ASSumptions. I owned one for tw0 years. I few of my friends owned several. This is the voice of experience. I hold no emotional dislike, but a rational distaste of something the purports one thing and delivers another. Inferior braking, handling, suspension, outdated design, engineering and specifications to start. Overpriced accessories and offensive marketing is the cherry on top. Why don't you ride and own other bikes for a couple of years and report back? |

Your description above is not why "cops" preferred Harleys. Cops prefer what their department will pay for. I know from first hand experience. Remember, they also have full-time motorpools servicing the bikes. If you'll look around, most agencies now demand something other than Harleys due to the issues I've mentioned. |

Not for the faint of heart at 85mph with mild knobbies. Also won't go any faster than that, but only an idiot would need to on something like that. Also, the speed limit doesn't go over that anywhere in the US so it's useless. No use for a commuter bike; I would get killed by all the drug addict people around here. |

Hmm, maybe for some it's about their idea of class. Harley does have the best marketing of any motorcycle company out there. So, if that image appeals to you, I could see it, but why? It's a fantasy. An emotional appeal to something that doesn't exist except for the 90 second slot on television or in some people's mind. And honestly, most Harley rider's aren't classy. It's upper middle class people trying to be cool on the weekends or bike night if the weather isn't too bad because they never actually were when younger, or it's hardcore old school Harley riders because that's all they know and it makes them feel secure in a world that's always changing. A very small segment are true outlaw bikers that are simply criminals that need to be imprisoned. However, non of those three exude "class". They make some nice shapes and sound unique.. I'll give you one small example of what makes HD what it is: Let's say the stator goes bad on your revered Jap superbike(look it up, most of you are posting shit from hearsay, anyway). You will, in some cases, travel many miles to find a dealer to diagnose the problem, be told that the part will be in next week, then also advised that the whole fucking bike needs to be disassembled in order to replace it(a week in the shop). Me, I'll drive a few miles in almost any direction, the HD dealer will pluck a new stator off the shelf, for about half what yours cost, and I'll drive home and replace it myself in about an hour, having a few toddies while I do it. Like I said, you sure worry a lot about shit you know nothing about. I can see Harleys being a unique and interesting vehicle that a certain person has in U.K. It's just not that here. It's a motorcycle. Indeed Japanese bikes to like to add many things, but you don't have to purchase that style of Japanese bike. By the way, I'd purchase a Triumph Rocket III before any Harley. Interesting you mention super cars. Everyone thinks they are cool. And they are! They do look very nice, and are admirable, but I don't want to own one. You must admit the comparison isn't fair. A modern supercar and an outdated motorcycle manufactured to their own specs...Well, the thing about them is that other people want them. I couldn't care less what others want of my property. I purchase for my own needs not others. |
