At the end of Taxi Driver why does Travis not show any further interest in Betsy?

Because he wasn't good enough for her the first time... and now, she wasn't good enough for him because of her shallow hypocrisy.

Travis was a man of principal.

Travis is obviously a very screwed up man. He subconsciously sabotaged his potential relationship with Betsy when he took her to that X-rated movie on their first date. When she approaches him again in the last scene, he runs from her in fear, just like he did on their first date, or rather, he drives her away. Based on his constant rejection by the women he approaches, he was probably a virgin. This is just my interpretation by the way. One of the things that is great about the movie is how many things are left unexplained. They don't make great films like that anymore in my opinion.

Yeah, a bunch of great movies came out in the 70's 1974 had The Godfather part 2 and Chinatown both competing for best picture. You don't get two great movies like that once in every 20 years nowadays.

Kubrick said he loved the fact that his movies can never be explained once and for all, but are open to the interpretation of the viewing public for posterity. That is the appeal of Kubrick as a filmmaker to most of his fans. You can watch 2001 or The Shining 50 times and notice something on the 51st viewing that you never noticed before. That is the definition of most truly great films in my opinion, of course.

Remember the scene where the guy with the beard was in the back of the cab, he told Travis to just sit there then he pointed out a window where he said his wife was up there cheating with a black guy? His wife was Betsy, she was cheating with the black man from the news stand she mentioned that could light a match with missing fingers. She had her fellow campaign person in the office try to light a match that way, he couldn't, remember? Betsy was cheating with the missing finger black man, and Travis, her husband was the bearded Jewish guy in the back of the cab that planned on shooting Betsy you know where, with his 44 magnum handgun. Open your eyes, look at the black ring on her finger.

AND, that scene of the guy's wife cheating up in that room with the black man, look at her shadow. Smoking the cigarette, it reminds us of the black man with the match lighting skills doesn't it? It's Betsy up there, and it's been in your face this entire time.

Wow. I never even looked at it in that way before. Explains why Betsy had friendzoned the fellow campaign guy too.
