A massive percentage of property taxes in rural New York is due to programs required by the state that these small towns don't want or need, all voted in by NYC.

Upstate people are pretty tough, loyal, and a good work ethic. I originally come from KC KS and I usually end up connected with up-state people everywhere I move. They have some of the NYC hustle mixed in with the blue collar real work ethic.
