By Ron Harui and Chris Young
March 16 (Bloomberg) -- The dollar declined to a 10-week low against the euro as a U.S. report today will probably show confidence among consumers fell to the lowest in six months, raising concern economic growth will slow.
The U.S. currency headed for the biggest weekly loss since December as the yield premium investors earn on benchmark two- year Treasuries over similar-maturity German bunds this week fell to the smallest in more than two years. The dollar also was set for a losing week against the yen.
``There's doubts about how strong the U.S. economy is,'' said Michael Thomas, head of economics and strategy at ICAP Australia Ltd. in Sydney. ``The numbers out of the U.S. we're seeing are on average a little bit weaker, which generally means weakness for the dollar.''
The U.S. currency dropped to $1.3283 per euro at 9:45 a.m. in Tokyo, the lowest since Jan. 3, from $1.3238 in New York yesterday. It also fell to 117.03 yen from 118.33 a week ago. The dollar will decline to $1.33 per euro and 115 yen in the next month, Thomas forecast.
The dollar has dropped 1.3 percent this week against the euro as the yield differential between benchmark two-year U.S. and German bonds narrowed to 0.5841 percentage point on March 13, the smallest since December 2004. The Reuters/University of Michigan's final index of sentiment, due at 10 a.m. Washington time, fell to 89.0 in March from 91.3 in February, according to a Bloomberg News survey.
`Overwhelm the Dollar'
The dollar also slipped on speculation more U.S. homebuyers with poor credit histories will fail to pay their loans. Harbinger Capital Partners and Paulson & Co., hedge-fund managers who profited when subprime-mortgage defaults surged, told investors yesterday delinquent loans will soar.
Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan yesterday said he expects subprime-mortgage defaults to ripple through other areas of the economy, especially if home prices fall.
``Sentiment is already weak from concern the subprime lending market isn't healthy,'' said Osao Iizuka, head of foreign exchange trading at Sumitomo Trust & Banking Co. in Tokyo. ``Bad economic data could overwhelm the dollar,'' which may fall to $1.33 per euro today, he said.
The yen rose after Japan's top currency official today said economic growth will be sustained ``in a very good manner'' and the Bank of Japan's policy is still accommodative, suggesting there's scope for the bank to raise interest rates further.
``We are proceeding very well,'' Hiroshi Watanabe, vice finance minister for international affairs, said in a speech in Sydney. Japan's growth rate will be more than 2 percent this year, a bit lower than expansions in the U.S. and Europe, he said.
``He's probably saying the Japanese economy can withstand a rate hike should such a need arise,'' said Yuji Saito, a senior currency dealer at Societe Generale SA in Tokyo. ``It's supportive of the yen,'' which may advance to 116.50 against the dollar and 154.50 versus the euro today, he said.
The Bank of Japan last month doubled the key overnight lending rate to 0.5 percent, the lowest among major economies. The central bank will probably keep rates on hold next week, according to all 48 economists surveyed by Bloomberg.

I keep saying it ... I'll say it again.
This is very typical action for the markets. We will not see a plunge until the shit hits the fan big.
You hear a little bad news ... buy the next day. You hear some good news , sell. Follow that plan and you'll be buying on every low and selling on every high.
Most can't get this in their head and flow back and forth with the herd , basically giving their money away with each turn.
When the shit's about to blow , you'll know it.
Until then , if you trade ... trade like you're a rich man. Not like a the sheep that get fleeced daily.
That's why 90% of the people in the markets are losers. You're part of the herd and don't even know it. |

Gold is being held in check right now ... so is silver. They're both being manipulated by shorts. |

No one will accept our brand of Democracy,Resisting it to the death,We need a new Paradigm ,One with basic liberties others will embrace,We can start by abolishing Sales License,Thereby eliminating the Middleman, and the regulation in the productions of goods and services.
let the farmers grow crops without permits, and every person sell his own labor,People should keep all but 10 percent of the wealth they create,Giving Government no more then 10 percent,People should be able to own property,Not just Hold it,
We have to much Government ,One of the 4 layers could be eliminated,Let the County Governments join the City Governments,Reducing them to three Layers,Police should serve the people,Not going around causing trouble,Whacking Blacks on the head with their clubs, |
