" Jets of gas and dust form long tails that we can see from Earth. These tails can sometimes be millions of miles long. "

The distance of earth from the comet when it runs through its path will be about 30 million kms. It will start to happen in the beginning of May.

Earth will be passing the debris field left behind Comet McNaught in May too. Now add this and Comet 2P/Encke.

Hey wake up folks and check the orbit simulation!!!!!
April 26 is the date if the simulation is correct.
I am not kidding!
 Quoting: Dil 51202

OK the view with which the simulation is set when you go there showed a collision.
It's true that it will miss earth by about the distance of the orbit between Mars and arth.

Tho I would say that's fucking close and this time earth will run through its tail obviously.

Here we go again.
No, we are not going to pass through the tail.
The comet is on the wrong side of our orbit and the ion tail will be pointing away from us. The dust tail will not be pointing at us either. It follows the comet's path and the comet's path never crosses earth orbit.
Not this millenium anyway.

Re: New Comet LoveJoy Discovered: Destination Unknown
According to the latest update, Comet Lovejoy will be a "no show" at magnitude 7, too dim to see with the eyes:

UPDATE: After four days of tracking, Comet Lovejoy's trajectory is known. The orbit is cockeyed, almost perpendicular to the rest of the solar system. At the moment the comet is swooping up from below, moving from southern to northern skies. At closest approach to Earth (0.44 AU) in late April, Comet Lovejoy is expected to brighten to 7th magnitude, still not a naked-eye comet but easy to see through small telescopes.

Comet DOES pass INSIDE Earths orbit in late April, so the tail pointinf AWAY from the sun DOES mean we pass THROUGH IT, debunkers !

Re: New Comet LoveJoy Discovered: Destination Unknown
Neither McNaught nor Lovejoy will produce meteor showers on earth. McNaught wasn't close enough to the Earth when it crossed the ecliptic plane to generate a debris field that the Earth could pass through and Lovejoy's current projected orbit takes it on the wrong side of our orbit.

No doom or meteors for you.
