Shadow,

Yeah, kinda pretty close right now I'd say.
 Quoting: 19.47 6933

The scales have tipped and I would have to agree that we have reached a critical point. Bees dissappearing is the warning. I just spoke to a bee keeper the other day to get the unedited story and he says 90% of their bees are gone... His Friend opened his 3000 hives and only 200 left.

Life, as we know it, is getting ready to change dramatically.

Albert Einstein "If all the honey bees were to die off, mankind would have 4 years left on earth"

Stock up folks, seriously. I won't even get into all the prophetic fulfillments taking plac right now

Well folks if you haven't been walking around in a coma you will perhaps have noticed that an outbreak of peace, goodwill and understanding does not seem likley to be breaking out in the Middle East anytime soon.

Perhaps a few more days, maby a few weeksor even a month or so. Who can say how long we have left. But rest assured that life as we know it will not be around for very much longer.

If you have still done nothing about stocking up on basics the do it now.

Re: Your Last Ever Supermarket Shopping Spree
I'm really wanting to do at least some minimal preparing. I'm a college student, so I'm in the city now but I'm from a small town/country in the north, about 300 miles from where I'm living now. If it went down, I would probably want to go back there, as I think chances for survival are better. It's a small town, so people know each other more, and are more willing to help each other out.

My problem is, I'm living off of each paycheck. I can't even afford car insurance, my rent and bills take up the rest of the money. I'd like to at least be able to afford one of those emergency 3 day survival kits or something. Also, every time I mention any of this to my friends, you know, to try to get a group of people together that will help each other out, they all think I'm insane and paranoid.

I try to get them to read some of the stuff I read, or watch things like Zeitgeist or Fiat Empire or America: From Freedom to Fascism, but they just think I'm too impressionable, and seem uninterested. One of my good friends parents are doctors, and that would be great to establish a partnership with them in case things go bad, but she is very critical of all of this. Unfortunately, most people, I fear, are too pampered by the system and don't seem to ever question the state of the country, or our government, as long as they're comfortable.

Then again, maybe I am just impressionable, and paranoid.

See, that's the thing. I've never considered myself naive, but I do look closely at a lot of this stuff that's said on here.
I've even bought a couple of those multi-tools, camping gear, I always fill up my gas, etc.
Impressionable, paranoid, smart? All of the above?

What say you?

Re: Your Last Ever Supermarket Shopping Spree
Some interesting posts here. I've been on this road for a while now...so a few comments. Plan to build a tribe. It's the only way, for many reasons. Build skills, this increases self confidence and reliance, and also is a commodity to be exchanged with others. Survive in situ - ie where you know the lay of the land. The learning curve with relocation is too steep.

As for shopping:

Step 1 - water (source), salt, and bleach. If in the country, as much salt as possible (preserves meat).

Step 2 - rice and beans, in quantities to feed a small tribe. Very cheap. Even cheaper - go to a livestock feed store. $10=50lbs. Lard or shortening - keeps forever, NOT oil!

Step 3 - Things to make the rice and beans taste better. Soya, sugar, dried soup bases, hot sauce, spices (lots), canned tuna, sardines, corned beef, tomato paste, etc. (PS- learn to cook).

Step 4 - Luxury/trade items - tea, coffee, candies, alcohol, tobacco, pot, pain killers, and did I say spices?

Build your skills. In my tribe I want a doctor, a farmer, a mechanic, a soldier, a cook, a fisherman, a builder, etc. The more that you know about these things, the less you will worry about finding something to eat.
 Quoting: SEADOG 159995

I agree with Seadog 100%: A loner will have a tough time of it regardless of the specific problems.

The one problem I see with all this storing stuff is it is short term. OK you have 2-3 years of food but what happens if that runs out? I can think of many naturally occurring calamities that might last 3-10 years and guess what your food ran out years ago.

If you don't know how to garden do it now! Buy non hybridized seed and learn how to grow them. Many people have said that they don't like heirloom seed because it's more difficult to grow or the yields are smaller. This is both true and not true, they can be more difficult but don't have to be and as far as yields this not true of all heirlooms. That is why now is the time to test, find out what is correct for you. The problem with hybrids is not the first year it's the second or third this is when you will find out what the parents were for that hybrid. The parent may and I will repeat MAY not produce what you want ie be as easy to grow or not produce the yields expected. They may not even produce fruit that you recognize as the original.

Please don't take me wrong I definitely believe in having at lest 2 years of food store. But that is only if you know you can secure them and keep that stash.

I guess my point is think long term as well as short.

Bleach. Then learn how to treat water. Bleach can make rain water relatively drinkable. A couple of bottles of bleach and a few packs of coffee filters is better than drinking raw rainwater or polluted public water when the pipelines are violated.
