Bleach loses potency over time. Use Pool Shock to treat water. Much cheaper, easier to store and does not lose its potency if it is kept dry. Just Make sure you get the calcium hypochlorite and not the sodium based shock.

You can use granular calcium hypochlorite to disinfect water.

Add and dissolve one heaping teaspoon of high-test granular calcium hypochlorite (approximately ¼ ounce) for each two gallons of water, or 5 milliliters (approximately 7 grams) per 7.5 liters of water. The mixture will produce a stock chlorine solution of approximately 500 milligrams per liter, since the calcium hypochlorite has available chlorine equal to 70 percent of its weight. To disinfect water, add the chlorine solution in the ratio of one part of chlorine solution to each 100 parts of water to be treated. This is roughly equal to adding 1 pint (16 ounces) of stock chlorine to each 12.5 gallons of water or (approximately ½ liter to 50 liters of water) to be disinfected. To remove any objectionable chlorine odor, aerate the disinfected water by pouring it back and forth from one clean container to another.

You can use chlorine tablets to disinfect filtered and settled water.
Chlorine tablets containing the necessary dosage for drinking water disinfection can be purchased in a commercially prepared form. These tablets are available from drug and sporting goods stores and should be used as stated in the instructions. When instructions are not available, use one tablet for each quart or liter of water to be purified.

:z3: Hi guys,

Thanks for bumping this thread back up. Currently it is the only survivalist thread* on the forum, as apparently those who are going to do it have already done it and have lost interest in the subject.

But for those of you who have not - even at this late date you are still blessed with a little time. Go through the posts because quite a few people have posted some really good information.

Then get $300 or $500 or whatever you can manage and STOCK UP WISELY. Remember cash, not credit cards. You don't want to leave a paper trail. And do it now - today - this week.

* Oops, except for one by Avain. But his is really for people who have already got their act togeather. And this thread is for those of you who have left it to the last minute and lack a lot of basic knowledge.

Please give this thread a bump back to page 1 every now and then. Thanks 9teen.47

Good thread, but I take exception to a couple of your statements. Might want to re-think suggesting people shoot dogs or a pony for food.

Many people think highly enough of their critters, that you might get that first shot off, but if you do, it could well be the last shot you'll ever fire, and you won't get the first taste of that pony or dog.

If you happen to stumble across a wild herd of ponies with no one guarding them, are you going to carve off a rump steak and leave the remainder to rot, or are you prepared to haul away and preserve several hundred pounds of meat?

As for storing water in garbage bags, or bin liners, many of them are treated with pesticides, so it would be good to know what you're using.

Good thread with many great ideas, but that dog and pony killing suggestion wasn't one of them. Rubbed me the wrong way.

715924,

I did say wondering around. So obviously I was not refering to animals or livestock that are fenced in. Although as a practical matter I think you would probably need an older child to keep an eye on them at all times.

But animals wondering around.* Sorry but it will be a tough new world out there. I will alter my suggestion to use a home made silencer or a bow and arrow. Life will be full of risks and like I said make sure that the owner, or alleged owner, does not see you. The thing is that if my belly is rumbling...then needs must.

What you said about pesticides in plastic bin liners is a bummer. Does anyone have any suggestions about cheap emergency water storage? I guess you could still use bin liners etc for cleaning/toilet flushing
water.

*Back when I wrote it I had an urban environment in mind. I was not suggesting raiding peoples farms or suchlike. Besides if an animal is wondering around, someone is going to have it and it might as well be you.

Apologies if I misunderstood you, but when you add "make sure the owner doesn't see you," it makes me think the intentions are less than honorable.

It was mentioned in the post on the first page.....the same one you quoted Bible verse and said how important it was to have a good Bible. Also mentioned again in this post.

Chances are good that whoever owns that livestock isn't going to have them roaming about. Chances are also good that your silencer or bow and arrow won't work either. I don't think you have a good concept of what you'd be up against.

Chances are also are excellent that the owner of that livestock will also have food stored ahead for them, and themselves. If you were to ask them, many, if not most, would be willing to share.

Plan on taking, harming, or killing any of them, and you'll likely not have to worry about your rumbling belly. Even more so if it becomes a "tough new world". Even that Bible won't be any deliverance for those who disregard what's between the cover of the Book.

Once again, there are some great ideas in the thread. Some need to be re-thought.

grizzy 715924,

Good in that case you shouldn't have any problem. But if it makes you feel any better I promise that I will try to remember to feel a twinge of guilt after I have filled my families hungry bellies.

MORE SALT As someone just said you need it to preserve meat, I did not recommend enough originally. I'd say at least 50 pounds if you can manage it. And it will last practically forever if kept dry.

I'm sorry if I come over as a bit cynical. But I really do think that you are being a bit unrealistic if you expect hungry people to do nothing when they see food for the taking.

And I will remind you that I was not recommending raiding.

bee1 Thanks for backing me up there 471789. I do not personally like the idea of killing wondering animals, but it is a survival situation we are talking about and we have to be realistic.

The only question in my mind is, will those who die competing for those resources then also be viewed as food resources themselves?

471789, I hope to be ruptured before then. But yes I do think that it will get that bad eventually. But in any case I am pretty sure that I will be dead by then, I am older and also know that I lack the ruthlessness that will be required. In any case we must all die so what counts is knowing the Lord and getting to heaven.

Raptured?

There are literally thousands of passages in the Bible referring to the Last Days, but only one, and only that one according to a very dubious interpretation, that refers to the Rapture. I would not put all my eggs in that basket if I were you. I fear that alot of self-proclaimed Christians will be among the most ruthless of them all if they end up feeling let down about getting raptured.

If you want a survival plan, try this instead : the meek will inherit the earth. if you find yourself in the streets fighting over someone's pet horse or dog, you're already screwed. Better to prepare now to be able to meekly lay low for a few months when TSHTF until all that sort of thing has come and gone.

I'm sorry if disagreeing with you means I have an acid tongue. I don't rely on luck to feed my family or friends, but thank you for your well wishes.

I don't think it was any more sincere than your promoting the Bible at the same time you think of cheating your landlord out of money for "some of your rent arrears…because he never turned up before you both left the house early yesterday evening!" Or considering feeding your family by stealing the labors of another persons work.

I'm sorry you've taken offense, and I'll leave your thread now. It isn't my intent to hijack it. I won't bother telling you why 1 lb. of insta cure will get you farther than your 50 lbs. of salt for your poaching efforts, but will leave you with some advice. When/if, the time comes, take the most peaceable road. Ask for help. Try for wild animals before you think of a persons dog, pony, or sheep. Ask and you shall receive. Take without asking, and you shall also receive. But it won't be what you're expecting.

I'll leave your thread now with apologies that you were offended, but no apology for my stand.

Re: Your Last Ever Supermarket Shopping Spree
I don't think it was any more sincere than your promoting the Bible at the same time you think of cheating your landlord out of money for "some of your rent arrears…because he never turned up before you both left the house early yesterday evening!" Or considering feeding your family by stealing the labors of another persons work.

I'll leave your thread now with apologies that you were offended,

grizzy 715924,

Humph! Not only an acid tongue, but a mean spirit as well. It should have been obvious to you that the opening post (which was written about two and a half years ago BTW) was a humorous piece bashing the average unprepared GLPer about the head with a pillow. A little story to get peoples interest in the subject.

As for being offended, don't worry about it. I learned a long time ago that dealing with twats on GLP comes with the territory.

Insta Cure™ No.1, a basic cure used to cure all meats that require cooking, smoking, or canning. This includes poultry, fish, ham, bacon, luncheon meats, corned beef, pates and other products too numerous to mention. Formerly Prague Powder #1.

Insta Cure

Use 1 level teaspoon per 5 lbs. of meat. 1 lb. Insta Cure™ will process approximately 480 lbs. of meat.

This sounds like it would be a good product for people to buy if they are planning to cure and process large amounts of meat.

But I think that salt would be the best bet for the average GLPer. You will need it for your own health as well as a preservative. It also makes a good trade item.
