Religionists in general, and the Religious Right in particular, have long had a running battle with POPULAR CULTURE.

Even the term 'CULTURAL WAR' was coined by the Religious Right.

In this particular 'WAR,' the Original Poster and I are on VERY DIFFERENT SIDES.

NIGHTSWIMMING

On nights gentle and quiet (to the extent that I encounter such), my thoughts turn in a slightly different direction :

The words below, so lyrical and melancholy, are from 'Nightswimming.' First done by REM, but then performed by Michael Stipe twice in 2005, while he was introduced in each case as the special guest of COLDPLAY. Last US appearance was in Austin, TX, USA in that year.

His words magnetize only when sung live by Michael Stipe, whose stage presence is quite powerful, even though he himself might at first appear an unlikely reservoir of charisma. Somehow makes me think of V van Gogh, with his close cropped hair and haggard demeanor. He tends to sing with his eyes gently closed, not unlike a mild trance. Yet the overall effects are transcendent.

Stipe owns the moment, and carries the audience with him, as his performance hovers beyond place and time.

Point is, music raises the octane of his words, giving them greater WOW power.

When Michael Stipe takes center stage, to the accompaniment of COLDPLAY, that's when the magic happens.

'Nightswimming'

Artist: R.E.M.

Album: 'Automatic For The People'

(Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe) [now M Stipe w/ COLDPLAY]

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night
The photograph on the dashboard, taken years ago
Turned around backwards so the windshield shows
Every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse
Still, it's so much clearer
I forgot my shirt at the water's edge
The moon is low tonight

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night
I'm not sure all these people understand
It's not like years ago
The fear of getting caught
Of recklessness and water
They cannot see me naked
These things, they go away
Replaced by everyday

Nightswimming, remembering that night
September's coming soon
I'm pining for the moon
And what if there were two
Side by side in orbit
Around the fairest sun?
That bright, tight forever drum
Could not describe nightswimming

You, I thought I knew you
You, I cannot judge
You, I thought you knew me
This one laughing quietly underneath my breath
Nightswimming

The photograph reflects
Every streetlight a reminder
Nightswimming deserves a quiet night,
Deserves a quiet night

On the Turning Away

On the turning away
From the pale and downtrodden
And the words they say
Which we won't understand
"Don't accept that what's happening
Is just a case of others' suffering
Or you'll find that you're joining in
The turning away"
It's a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting it's shroud
Over all we have known
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we're all alone
In the dream of the proud
On the wings of the night
As the daytime is stirring
Where the speechless unite
In a silent accord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerised as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change
On the wings of the night
No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away
From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there'll be
No more turning away?

unless your daughter did all of these things...that have a greater effect on children...the experiment is false.

Op, thanks so much for posting those videos! Just watched the first, and really want to see the rest soon. There is truth there that most don't want to see. But isn't that how it is in this world? Most are blinded by satan and don't want to see the truth. Thanks for having the courage to post these, knowing the kind of rocks that would be thrown at you for doing so. God Bless!

I am not advocating "banning" anything.

I am very much for free speech and the free expression of ideas.

What I do hope is that people will start to question where their music comes from.

People should recognize that much of this music is from the same source with the same message and with the same agenda.

After watching even the first part of this series, will anyone deny that the source for much of this music is darkness?

My hope is that once people see the truth that they will make better choices.

Re: Have You Sold Your Soul For Rock and Roll? Is your music inspired by Aleister Crowley, New Age Religion and Lucifer? Is your music leading you on a
I think most of that stuff is a crock.

I started playing rock-'n'roll in garage bands (which we didn't call "garage bands") when I was fourteen; that's 48 years ago. With almost no breaks, I've been playing and/or giving guitar lessons since then, even doing it full time for four years (and starving).

There's always been raunchy stuff; some of you old pharts may even remember Link Wray, whose instrumentals were banned because they were too "nasty".

Whatever.

I play bluegrass now, and about a quarter or a third of bluegrass is gospel, so we do that in our shows, too.

And that doesn't make us any more or less "holy"!

Blaming music for crazy activities of an adult is a copout; if you're a kid who's easily swayed by some of the garbage out there, then it's up to the parents to close the lid on it. When my son was 14-16, he was big into rap. I vetted all his CDs; I told him there'd be no referring to women as "hos" or bitches" in my house.

Blaming music for behavior is like blaming Big Macs for heart attacks; it's the people eating that crap (or listening to it) who are to blame.

The only thing that made me naucious was the bad judgements.

Also, Aleister Crowley was not a satanist or luciferian. He was an alchemist with a very sick and twisted sarcastic sense of humor.

And trying to interpret Neil Young's Hey hey, my my song into something having to do with the devil was pretty sad also.

Mr. Crowley, did you talk with the dead
Your life style to me seemed so tragic
With the thrill of it all
You fooled all the people with magic
You waited on Satan's call

Uncovering things that were sacred manifest on this Earth
Conceived in the eye of a secret
And they scattered the afterbirth

Mr. Crowley, won't you ride my white horse

Perhaps ‘Countries’ -- like ‘Friends’ and ‘Home’ and ‘Family’ and ‘Community’ -- are only another in a long list of FICTIONS.

"I think most of that stuff is a crock."
I think your post is one of the very most dishonest posts I have ever read on GLP, and that's saying something. If you have been into music as long as you say, and I do believe that part, then you KNOW it has a very strong emotional influence, and all the naysaying you can do won't get around that inconvenient truth.

Even though I could have predicted the responses here, I myself do question if there is a problem in all this.I think of how music has influenced my life, how memories of a certain song are tied to certain times of my life, and I begin to wonder--do I really want my emotions influenced by those of a total stranger who may or may not be intentionally manipulating me?

You can say exaxctly the same thing about any of the worlds religous texts. Do you personally know the author(s). No. so they are strangers and if you believe in which evr religion you are allowing others to influence and mold you..NO?
 Quoting: Dr Dre 5755

That you would even attempt to deflect the truth of this thread by resorting to religion proves you don't want to deal with the truth. You want to change the subject, because you know it is the truth.
