Help needed with Windows & MS Office Update problems

I have been using this as an alternative. windows update went haywire about a year ago. If it doesn't hang it seems to take a fishy amount of CPU juice to do "simple updating"



Why use WindizUpdate?

Not only will it keep you up to date with the latest updates from Microsoft, it will also keep software and drivers from other vendors updated. However, that functionality is currently missing.



Good reasons to use WindizUpdate
No personally identifiable information is collected from your computer.
No more unwanted flowers -- Microsoft Internet Explorer can finally be removed from your computer (if that were possible).
It lists just the updates you need. If an update has been superceded by a newer one, it will not ask you to install the older one.
Using enhanced data from MBSA, WindizUpdate will find more security patches needed for your O/S than the "other" website.
If there is a security issue with a component that is not yet installed, it will not ask you to update it. For example, if you have not installed hyperterminal, it will not update it.
It is not restricted to just Microsoft products. Software from other vendors can also be updated.
Upgrading to the latest version of Internet Explorer is not considered a Critical Update!
Works on Windows versions no longer supported by Microsoft -- Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 95
Our plugin is not an ActiveX control.
Integrated download manager with error detection -- you can cancel downloads at any time, and the next time you wish to install the cancelled update, it will continue from where it left off. Only corrupted sections of the file are redownloaded.

Disadvantages
There is a delay from when new updates are released from Microsoft to when they appear on this site.
If you're using Internet Explorer, you will need to use Microsoft's Windows Update site for updates -- this site will be of no use to you.
You'll need to upgrade your browser if you're using MSIE 4.xx -- This site won't work, neither will Microsoft's.

For a long time I managed to keep that automatic update process disabled and I had no problems. Now I seem to have done something that activated this horror of "automatic updates" that cannot be disabled... just hangs the machine.

This is annoying beyond belief. Hell, I bought these products and this is how MS treats me as loyal customer??

I'm seriously considering scrapping it all and load a nice linux distribution. I have no time for this. Who does.

I had the same problem a while ago; finally got all the updates to install by doing them in stages.

I figured that certain updates are dependant on some previous updates being installed, and by installing them all at once would probably cause the computer to hang.

I tried to do a stepwise update but failed... or how am i to tell really when the damned shit just hangs for so long. Somehow it managed to upgrade to IE 7 but this did nothing to solve the problem.

Sorry if I sound like a nagging old fool but this is it. I spent a full six hours trying to solve this shit and failed, I must ask myself if the time wouldn't be better spent installing another OS.

Microsoft gives free customer support for windoze update problems.
At least they did last year when they helped me with the same problem.

You've got problems which many people have experienced. It has to do with msi.dll. Read this:

Thanks N.O.S.Trum, very good link. From the description of symptoms etc on that Knowledgebase article this fix should do the trick. The fix installed ok but still all Office updates fail. After the failed update process there is still the 100% cpu issue.

Now I resorted to the crude solution of simply disabling the automatic update service in the service manager. Problem "solved", now the computer stopped behaving like an old 486 at least.

The Windizupdate tip above seems promising, very snappy behavior just like it should be. It seems to work only for the English language versions though, it didn't find any of the security updates for my non-English Office 2003 version.

So essentially I'm back at square one, which is not that bad after all :)

Too bad I cannot do anything about all those vulnerabilities in the Office products, this is the target of much m@lw@re.

The OpenOffice suggestion is not bad at all, this could very well be the easiest solution for now. I had a look at their Word counterpart and it seems both stable and feature-rich enough. Maybe a little heavier on the resource consumption perhaps?
