Chinese President Xi Jinping recently consolidated power. Trump told the gathering: "He's now president for life. President for life. And he's great." Trump added, "I think it's great. Maybe we'll give that a shot someday." Trump criticized his Democratic presidential opponent Hillary Clinton, repeated his view about "a rigged system," and called the Iraq invasion "the single worst decision ever made." He has enough sense of the rightness and decency of the American system to make light of such things for comic effect. His predecessor, by contrast, would have said the same thing, more likely in private, but it wouldn't have been a joke. He'd have meant it. Similar to what prompted Canada's leftwing Justin Trudeau last year to shed a few tears for Fidel Castro when he died. President Trump instead commented on the totalitarian cruelty and political sickness of Castro upon his death. . |
