Firearms. The only sure way to ensure your domestic security because the government does not love you enough to protect you from "terrorists" and other natural or manmade disasters.

However they would prefer you to surrender your freedom for security (tyranny) so keep that in mind negative voting voters.

Defend your personal rights and freedoms because when martial law comes nobody will do it for you. Keep that in mind you urban yuppies who have the guts to even look at this thread.

Re: Patriot Weapon of Choice -- AR15
i am a big fan of the AR for urban combat, light and high capacity, although it shoots a varmit round, only designed to wound , i don't want to get shot by one! nor a .22 for that matter

i am still thinking of going back to the springfield M1A, if I could only have one rifle, .308 is just a far more lethal round , much greater distance, and can punch though a whole lot more, but it is heavier, but i think an all round better weapon

but for now, i am very happy with a lightweight AR

True. 5.56 sucks. However what if the ends are coated in teflon?

I'd take 7.62 anyday of the year. Especially if the military is trying to take your freedoms away. Can't take any chances when your fighting for your rights.

infrared is like twenty grand! i wish

teflon coated? for what? penetrating body armor? not if they have ballistic shields, that will stop 30.06 armor piercing

i would rather shoot .223 with hollow points, since nato won't allow it for good reason

somehow snipers got around that, using boat tailed hollow points because of the accuracy improvements,, ok?

.308 is the way to go, if you make your shots count, and can carry the damn thing, since you can't normally carry 300 rounds, like i can with .223

what is an M80? do you mean the belt fed M60?

i have been checking out serbu for quite awhile, the semi auto is pretty tempting for five grand, half of what a barret is going for these days

i was checking out there shorty 12 gauge at the last gun show, pretty damn pricey for what you get, but it would be nice to have attached to your web gear, for entries

Re: Patriot Weapon of Choice -- AR15
I have never owned a gun and never will, but if I were to get one, it would certainly not be anything chambering the 5.56 NATO round.

The reason is that it is simply too small to work on anything other than coyotes and IRS agents.

I hear a lot of people talking about how portable the AR (or the Mini-14) is, and it's true that the rifle and a hundred rounds of ammunition weigh a lot less than a similar carbine chambered in 7.62X39 or .308. But do any of you see yourselves as a highly mobile strike-force participiant, or merely as a homeowner defending his or her freehold? If I were into such things, I'd certainly pick the latter, which renders the advantages of light weight pretty irrelevant.

To my way of thinking, I'd want a gun that I and my family/friends can use to hold off attackers on our own ground; and a gun that can do a lots of other things, too, such as murdering Bambi. Given that one or two well-placed shots would be a lot more effective that spray-'n'-pray, I doubt if I'd give a lot of importance to a large magazine, either.

And finally, unless you all have a lot more money than I, you'd probably want an auto-loading carbine that would be inexpensive enought to use to outfit your family, which might mean three or four of them. Certainly, from a logistics point of view, a single model would drastically cut down on the number of other items (such as reloading dies, spare parts, and ammunition) you'd need to buy.

So using those criteria -- big enough caliber to knock down a deer or elk, accurate out to a hundred or hundred-fifty meters, reliable, and inexpensive in both non-recurring (buying the gun) and recurring (ammunition and parts) costs -- I'd pick Comrade Simonov's wonderful little self-loading carbine, the Samozaryadni Karabin Simonova AKA the SKS.

Of course, since I do not own any guns, this is purely an hypothetical exercise on my part.

Re: Patriot Weapon of Choice -- AR15
My 2 cents.
If you are planning on being out in the bush for an extended period of time, stick with the AK just for ease of maintenance.

If you think you will need lots of ammo stick with an AR.

If you have the best of both worlds and can hunker down and defend with a strong supply base stick with an FN.

My weapon of choice are the FN clones. Never had a problem with them. My last one was a tack driver with NATO surplus.

Just keep in mind the mission and your own limits. If you are going to go OFE and have to carry everything on your back, 223 is really appealing. But if you will be moving alot you won't have the chance to keep it clean enuff to be worthwhile.Unlike a military unit, you won't have an armoror to fix it if something breaks.

John Paul, you make a good point; determining where to get ammunition long-term could be tricky.

7.62X39 is dirt-cheap, but most of it is steel shells; these are difficult to reload unless you have carbide dies (which you can get for the Dillon 500 Progressive, which is truly a gift from God).

Glad to see you are on the job...I watched a border patrol agent use an M4 (M16 variant) to stop a thug who was hurling an unknown object..

Re: Patriot Weapon of Choice -- AR15
From the Michigan Militia Handbood for LEVEL 1 - BASIC READINESS:

The AR15 is the civilian version of the rifle used by the US armed forces, the M16. As it is possible that militia units will find it necessary to fight alongside US units in defending our country, this would be an appropriate choice. These rifles come in so many barrel lengths, and with so many options and variants, that it would be very difficult to not find one that suits you. The AR is a precision made, close tolerance machine. This provides more accuracy than nearly any other standard military semi-auto rifle, but it requires fastidious cleaning to ensure reliability. Some loose tolerance rifle types, like the AK series, are famous for being subjected to mud and rust by illiterate rural peasants anywhere in the world, and still come up shooting every time. The AR is more suitable for Americans, who use machinery
every day (cars, phones, computers, doorknobs, flushing toilets), and are much more likely to be capable of maintaining it. Most of the US military surplus gear that is currently available is geared toward this weapon. It is a favorite of many militia types.

you can't go wrong with any of the weapons mentioned here, it is best if friends and families at least stick to the same caliber at the minimum, perferably the same weapon though

if that is the case, buy ammo in bulk, and spare parts, they are both cheap now and could become non existent overnight

While I am all for 'Gun Porn', the US obsession with the we wussy .223 escapes me...

Junk on top of junk...

I'd rather have a modified M1 Carbine out to .223 ranges...

M14 at the very least (That's a 7.62 NATO / .308 WIN for you wannabes)...

If I had an ultimate, it would be an M1 Garrand variant that had a 20 round detachable mag, with an 18 inch carbine barrel and select fire...M1/M2 Ball (.30-06) is my friend...

I bought a few hundred new brass empties, and a a couple thousand bullets for 7.62x39, just to keep in reserve. The SKS really beats up the brass, so I'm saving it for emergencies, and shooting the cheap steel cased stuff till I run out.
