Why not reload steel cases?
The only reasons I'm aware of are that it's hard on dies, and the steel can only be resized a few times before it cracks. As Duncan said, carbide dies make the first a moot point, and a few reloads is better than no ammo.
Lee Precision also makes some very affordable carbide dies.

They list some interesting loads with cast bullets and pistol powders that I'd like to try. I wonder if they have enough oomph to cycle the action.

Re: Patriot Weapon of Choice -- AR15
Here is a quote from [link to makarov.com] a site for reloading a particular pistol caliber:

”Make sure it is a reloadable case; not all cases are brass. Aluminum cases, such as CCI Blazers, should not be reloaded. Steel cases are very tough on reloading dies. Unless you have a very hard time obtaining brass cases, these should be discarded.”

As I had mentioned earlier, steel cases are not the best approach, and require carbide dies and careful measurement; also, you’d be lucky to get two reloads from a 7.62 X 39 mm case.

I don’t recommend reloading with steel cases, but as you can see if you’ve actually tried to do so, steel cases can be reloaded. In an emergency situation, you might think that another couple of magazines of ammunition are a bit more important than not, but that is your choice.

Perhaps a better choice would be to buy commercially-available brass -- or 7.62X39 hunting cartridges, such as two manufactured by Winchester: Q3174 or X76239. However, they run about $.80 each, and, by the time you add the primers, powder, and bullets, you may find that reloading is not all that good an option.

But in the final analysis, you can reload some steel case in an emergency, despite what some keyboard warriors may advise.

I bought a few hundred new brass empties, and a a couple thousand bullets for 7.62x39, just to keep in reserve. The SKS really beats up the brass, so I'm saving it for emergencies, and shooting the cheap steel cased stuff till I run out.
 Quoting: Evil Twin

I buy Wolf with the steel casings and don't plan on reloading because of the fact that the SKS beats the crap out of brass anyway. I understand people's point about the choice of ammo and came to the conclusion I would have to stock up. If I ever get close to running out, I'm sure I would have picked up a few weapons along the way, if you know what I mean, before I run out of my stocked ammo.

As I mentioned before, I have never owned a gun and never will, but I have heard great things about the Mossberg 500. You can buy the combo (with 18-1/2" and 28" cylinder bore barrels) and, for about a hundred fifty bucks more, buy a 21" rifled barrel for firing Brennecke slugs. Since the barrels lock onto the breech "extender", you could mount an Aimpoint on the extender and have it work for all three barrels and loads, although it might be overkill for the 18" barrel firing #7 dove LOL!!.

The Brennecke slug, by the way, drops about 10 inches or more over a hundred meters, but is still accurate out to that distance. It will work fine on mule deer at those ranges; and, with all the other options, from #8 target to 00 to incendiary rounds, there isn't much you can't do with a slide action shotgun.

 Quoting: Apocalypse Troll

I think that an 18-inch barrel (for mobility) and a regular stock (for control) would be the optimum configuration for a defense shotgun.

One of those pistol grips makes it too easy for an introder to deflect your aim if he gets close enough. (Try it yourself sometime by having someone try to knock an unloaded shotgun that you're holding aside, first while it's fitted with a stock, then fitted with just a pistol grip.)

But I think the bayonet lug and bayonet makes the shotgun a bit heavy and harder to aim in a very rapid-scenario situation where the closeness of the potential intruder means you'd have to swivel the gun very rapidly 45 degrees or more. also the length of the bayonet would make the shotgun a lot clumsier and likely to bang on the wall or catch on a curtain in such a scenario.

Just my opinion, of course.

The Canadian Federal Gun Registry knows who is a legal owner and when the USAns invade they will know too.

That being said, I would like to highlight a 7.62x39 piece for you AK lovers.

The CZ-858 is a Czech gun that was used by the Czech army when they were in the Warsaw pact.

It is a semi-automatic and therefore it is a non-restricted gun in Canada. (the magazines are sold with pop rivets installed limiting them to 5 bullets).

At first glance thhe CZ-858 has the exact silhouette of an AK-47 but its bolt action is completely different. The casings eject out the top like an SKS rather than out the safety switch portal as on an AK-47.

Th CZ-858 is as lightweight as the "Galil" (an AK-47 clone that shot 5.56 M-16 rounds)that I had in the IDF. It is much lighter than the SKS.

At 50 metres it can put 5 bullets into a one inch square.
It is so comfortable to use that a first time shooter was almost able to match this accuracy on his 4th try.

I agree. If you have not trained on using a bayonet, and do not continue to train in its use and application, you have no business having one.

That being said, if you know how to use one, get one.

I'll go with simple and realiable everytime. AK, moss 500 pump, and EAA witness which is basicaly a CZ made for USA. I have never had my AK jam, ever, and I've put just about everything through it from junk to gems. Could probably bury all three of those weapons, dig em up, chuck em on the ground a few times to shake the shit loose, cycle up and fire. I got some fancier ones, but those are about as "count on em of you had to" as it gets.

I have nothing but praise for Springfield's XD pistols, speaking of simple and reliable. I've got one in .45 that I've put nearly 6000 rounds through, firing sideways gangsta style, upside down, left hand limp-wristed, you name it. It's never jammed, feeds any ammo I've put through it. Taken it shark fishing on a boat for a week, slogged through the swamps while hunting hogs, dropped it. Field strips with no tools, doesn't rust. It is my go-to fighting gun, if I ever need one.

Re: Patriot Weapon of Choice -- AR15
I have never owned a gun and never will, but if I were to get one, it would certainly not be anything chambering the 5.56 NATO round.

The reason is that it is simply too small to work on anything other than coyotes and IRS agents.

I hear a lot of people talking about how portable the AR (or the Mini-14) is, and it's true that the rifle and a hundred rounds of ammunition weigh a lot less than a similar carbine chambered in 7.62X39 or .308. But do any of you see yourselves as a highly mobile strike-force participiant, or merely as a homeowner defending his or her freehold? If I were into such things, I'd certainly pick the latter, which renders the advantages of light weight pretty irrelevant.

To my way of thinking, I'd want a gun that I and my family/friends can use to hold off attackers on our own ground; and a gun that can do a lots of other things, too, such as murdering Bambi. Given that one or two well-placed shots would be a lot more effective that spray-'n'-pray, I doubt if I'd give a lot of importance to a large magazine, either.

And finally, unless you all have a lot more money than I, you'd probably want an auto-loading carbine that would be inexpensive enought to use to outfit your family, which might mean three or four of them. Certainly, from a logistics point of view, a single model would drastically cut down on the number of other items (such as reloading dies, spare parts, and ammunition) you'd need to buy.

So using those criteria -- big enough caliber to knock down a deer or elk, accurate out to a hundred or hundred-fifty meters, reliable, and inexpensive in both non-recurring (buying the gun) and recurring (ammunition and parts) costs -- I'd pick Comrade Simonov's wonderful little self-loading carbine, the Samozaryadni Karabin Simonova AKA the SKS.

Of course, since I do not own any guns, this is purely an hypothetical exercise on my part.
 Quoting: Duncan Kunz

I would never own a gun as well, but if I did It wld be a cheap sks-d picked up a long time ago and a ak in .223.
