** Breaking : Massive gas pipeline explosion in Illinois | |
Prussian Blue (nli) User ID: 228666 United States 04/29/2007 03:12 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Interesting! I'm curious to know what caused the gas to ignite. I would think that a ruptured gas line would simply allow the gas to escape into the air. What was the flame source that cause the gas to burn? Also, by calling it "an explosion" suggests that a weakness in the line and high gas pressure caused the thing to blow up. I wouldn't think the pressure in the line would be high enough to cause an explosion. Again, just a release into the atmosphere. What caused the explosion? |

He and I have had a few discussions about the dangers of pipelines. There are over 2 million miles of natural gas lines running under the U.S.alone, with many of those miles of pipelines running right under our cities and towns. Some of the possibilities range from a bullet, to lightening, to operator accident, to excavation can cause any of these pipelines to explode. There are a lot of possibilities. There's a great deal of info. and maps of the current pipelines all over the Internet. It's another scarey thing to add to the already long list of things that could go wrong. |
CAS IS MAD! User ID: 228959 United States 04/29/2007 03:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I cannot recall the particulars, but I did hear and see briefly on one of the news channels yesterday...somewhere in the US...there was some type of huge storage container of gasoline, which was "struck by lightning" and caught on fire with a massive burn. I do not recall where this was, but I briefly glanced at the tv screen, and it was a huge round storage container of gasoline burning wildly. GOD BLESS. |

Since this occurred at 4:40 am I suspect that operator error and excavation can be ruled out. How would a lightning strike affect the pipe if it was buried in the ground? Was the pipe at this explosion site in the ground? |

ashesand sackcloth User ID: 230143 United States 04/29/2007 10:37 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was driving north on I465 back in the summer of 2000. Saw a big blast mushroom cloud go up. Couldn't believe how high the thing went. Thought a gas station must have blown up but turned out to be a pipeline hit by a contractor. Melted part of a house and I think one woman was killed along with a few on the crew that hit it. Turning onto 96th st I was able to see the road on fire 3 miles away easy. Booner |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 230189 Ireland 04/30/2007 01:55 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Fatal Tanker Truck Explosion Damages Road POSTED: 8:14 am CDT April 27, 2007 UPDATED: 4:28 pm CDT April 27, 2007 E-mail this story | Print this story Sign Up for Breaking News Alerts HOUSTON -- Part of the interchange between the Eastex Freeway and Interstate 10 will be closed for months after a tanker truck explosion damaged the ramps, KPRC Local 2 reported. Tanker Truck Explosion Caught On Home Video Houston police said Luis Perez took a ramp at the interchange too quickly and lost control just after midnight Friday. "It appears the vehicle may have been traveling fast enough to cause it to roll over," Capt. M.W. Martin said. "When it burst into flames its cargo also ignited, causing an explosion." Massive flames extended about three stories high. Perez, 39, was killed instantly, police said. "There is fire and heat damage to the overpass," Martin said. The intense heat caused parts of the concrete overpasses to crumble and turn into gravel. The ramp from U.S. Highway 59 southbound to I-10 eastbound will be closed for about two weeks while repairs are made. One lane of the ramp from I-10 eastbound to U.S. Highway 59 northbound will be closed for up to two months to repair beams, officials said. The trucking company's insurance will pay for the repairs and clean up. Investigators said the truck was unusual because it had single wheels. "It has only been made for a few years," Officer L. Morrison said. "They quit making it because of the instability. Some states don't even allow it." The truck was hauling diesel and premium unleaded fuel, police said. Residents said the explosion frightened them. "I heard about four booms," Jennifer Denley said. "I shook it off and didn't think nothing of it; then I looked out the window and I saw my neighbors running. I thought it was a gun or a cannon going off, and it just shook the whole couch, the whole house." Investigators said Perez should not have been traveling on the Eastex Freeway. Trucks carrying hazardous chemicals are required to stay on the loop unless they are making a delivery in town. Amateur photographer Stephen Taylor grabbed his camera when he saw what happened. "The whole sky was black; it was filled with smoke," Taylor said. "At one point the fire went underground, and they said it was traveling in the sewer system. There was smoke coming up out of the sewer systems and up under the freeway from the grids." Taylor gave the video he shot to firefighters so they can use it for training purposes. |
