How Come Deadly Tornadoes Only Hit Small Towns
A few years back another small town but in southwest Missouri was leveled by a huge deadly tornado, now I am asking why only these small rural towns are twisters destroying how come they don't touch down on big Cities like Kansas City, etc.?

They do hit big cities too. There is alot of small towns in tornado alley so it seems more frequent I think.

They do not always take that route tornado alley so to speak, but what I do always notice is they don't touch big cities, how come? Just think if one went through "Kansas City" or Springfield, MO.

If those big cities mention took a direct hit, how come no fatalities are mentioned? When they hit small rural towns many people die. Is it because stone building protect people?

I live in tornado alley, our town has been hit a few times but nothing severe.took out a house I lived in a month after I moved.no one was in it at the time.used to chase them when I was younger.you would think we're a bunch of hicks.everytime they come through everybody stands on their front porch looking for them instead of moving some place safe.

The fact that tornado alley gets raked by 100 to 200 to 300+ mph winds each season explains why there's not alot of people there. I bet alot of people who witnessed things like that moved out.

Kansas has the most tornadoes, it ought to have on its license plates "Land of the Twisters".

large cities usually have a heat island caused by sunlight being absorbed by the concrete
this keeps the large tornadoes away from the inner city areas...usually

Actually, Texas has the most twisters, but Texas is a lot bigger. Kansas and Oklahoma may have more per square mile. That would be interesting to know.

the tornadoes which hit metro areas are usually smaller and locally generated
and usually happen on cooler days
because the heat island effect is absent

Agreed. During the recent spring storms here in Texas, massive cells headed towards Austin would split and go around the city. Communities directly south and north were slammed, with hardly so much as rain in the central city (just strong winds).

Jarrell, TX (a small town) experienced an F5 in 1997.

It was so strong it peeled up pavement. I heard that even storm cellars were pulled up. A strange thing is that it was moving from the northeast to the southwest which is the opposite of the direction tornadoes usually take.

It's also why mobil home parks are so often hit by tornadoes. These parks are almost always zoned on a city's perimeter (where there's less heat).
