Pakistan set to declare state of emergency
Quote

remember folks, the pakis have nukes, and if you think India is going to sit by while the "radicals" get control of them,, not going to happen, also, the taliban are making quite a showing in afghanistan, this is , or could be a very decisive turn of events:

President Musharraf could declare a state of emergency in Pakistan amid growing civil unrest against his increasingly embattled regime.

Security forces were placed on high alert yesterday, detaining hundreds of activists on the eve of an anti-government rally in Karachi. Rival demonstrations are planned by supporters of General Musharraf, raising fears of violent clashes in the southern port city today.

An extra 15,000 police and paramilitary troops have been deployed to Karachi where the country’s Chief Justice, who was suspended by General Musharraf, is expected to urge his supporters to step up their campaign of opposition to the Government. General Musharraf, a key US ally in the War on Terror, removed Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry on March 9 for alleged misconduct. His action triggered violent protests in defence of the judiciary, which had previously enjoyed a degree of independence under the military-backed regime.

Opposition to General Musharraf’s alleged attack on the independence of the judiciary was initially led by lawyers’ associations and rights groups striving to bring Pakistan under the rule of law. But the protests have evolved into a pro-democracy movement, with broad support across Pakistan that extends well beyond earlier antigovernment demonstrations that were led by radical Islamic groups.

The protests, which were declared illegal, escalated after a series of violent clashes with security forces, and have grown to present the most serious challenge to General Musharraf since he seized power in a bloodless coup in 1999. On Thursday unidentified gunmen fired gunshots at the residence of Munir Malik, the president of the Pakistan Bar Council, who is also an attorney for the sacked judge. A 14-judge bench of the Supreme Court is due to start hearing a series of petitions challenging the suspension of the judge.

Shaukat Aziz, the Prime Minister, last week hinted at the imposition of a state of emergency if police were unable to restore order. Opposition leaders gave a warning that any such action could push the country towards civil strife.

Tens of thousands of people greeted Justice Chaudhry last week when he travelled from Islamabad to the central Punjab city of Lahore, which is General Musharraf’s main support base. The judge, who has emerged as a symbol of the pro-democracy movement, threw down a gauntlet when he declared that the days of authoritarian rule in the country were numbered.

General Musharraf is also to address a mass rally in Islamabad today in an attempt to counter the nationwide demonstrations in support of Justice Chaudhry. Barricades have been erected along the roads leading to the administrative district, where the President is due to speak. General Musharraf’s opponents claim that government supporters are being transported to the city to give the impression that the President enjoys widespread support there.

General Musharraf, who is also the Chief of Army Staff, has announced his intention to seek another term as President in September or October, but refuses to declare whether he will relinquish his military post as required by Pakistan’s constitution.

Some analysts claim that his main motive for removing Justice Chaudhry is to be able to appoint a loyal chief justice who would thwart a constitutional challenge to his plans.

Malu, I am sure you have looked at a map and seen how we have surrounded nations in the region. What many people do not see when looking at the same map is how we can be cut off.

Imagine what happens to our troops in Afghanistan if Pakistan changes sides. Imagine the exits to the Persian Gulf.

Look at the map with a pessismistic eye,and tell me what you see. I don't think India is afraid of Pakistan and vice versa, they have kissed and made up. Even the Indian President is a muslim.

Mushareff is on very thin ice,and so are we.

Tough position for Musharraf, if he squeezes the people any harder they will snap, and if he conceeds to them, the American administration will bust his nuts...

Rock and a hard place, but this is what I knew would happen if the U.S tried to get a foothold in Muslim countries...The Paki's know Musharraf is a U.S stooge, but with the U.S active in the reason these people are not only mad, but fighting mad...

I expect radicals to become more radical by the day, the hornets will eventually stir and the whole thing could fall apart...

Something to watch...

Violence Leaves 27 Dead in Pakistan as Political Crises Worsens
By Benjamin Sand
Islamabad
12 May 2007

At least 27 people have been killed in clashes between pro- and anti-government activists in Pakistan's largest city, Karachi. VOA correspondent Benjamin Sand reports from Islamabad the widespread violence represents a major challenge to President Pervez Musharraf's authority.

Supporters of opposition chant slogans against Pakistan's President Gen. Pervez Musharraf upon arrival of Pakistan's suspended Chief Justice at Karachi airport on Saturday
Supporters of opposition chant slogans against Pakistan's President Gen. Pervez Musharraf upon arrival of Pakistan's suspended Chief Justice at Karachi airport on Saturday
Terrified residents took shelter Saturday as gunfire and other violence swept through the southern port city of Karachi.

Police and witnesses say the fighting began Saturday morning.

Thousands of pro-government activists roamed the city streets as opposition groups attempted to gather to support the country's suspended chief justice, Iftakhar Mohammed Chaudhry.

Pakistani television showed people marching through Karachi streets carrying handguns, assault rifles and flags of a pro-government party. Scores of vehicles were set on fire.

Talat Hussain is the news director for Pakistan's Aaj Television network. Speaking by phone from Karachi he says pro-government gunmen attacked the network's offices after it showed live footage of the violence outside. "This is like a battlefield. There is no law enforcement in sight and bullets are flying all around," he said.

Officials say more than 15,000 police and para-military forces were deployed throughout the city.

The former chief justice spent most of the day stranded inside Karachi's main airport and was ultimately forced to cancel plans to address his supporters.

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf addressed his own political rally in Islamabad Saturday night, several hours after the situation in Karachi appeared to be improving.

He says he will not impose any emergency restrictions on the country. He says there is no need to take such extreme measures and the country's democracy will continue its course. He said national elections will be held later this year.

Pakistan Musharraf suspended Chaudhry on March 9 over unspecified allegations that he abused his authority.

The move sparked protests around the country and remains one of greatest political crises President Musharraf has faced since he seized power in a 1999 military coup.

His critics say Mr. Musharraf only removed the judge to gain control over the country's judiciary ahead of those planned national elections.

He is expected to seek another five-year presidential term while also remaining the country's military chief, a move his critics say is unconstitutional and subject to challenge in the country's high court.

Opposition parties are demanding the judge either be reinstated or that Mr. Musharraf resign from office.

Neither side has made any move toward compromise and the political standoff shows no signs of lessening.

Sorry but that's not accurate.

Israel have approximately about 100-200 nukes.

Pakistan have 30-50 ready-made nukes.

The only other country that have more nukes than Israel is China.

China is a much bigger threat to India than Pakistan. That's why China's helping Pakistan.
