Anonymous Coward User ID: 240017 United States 05/22/2007 01:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Update: Just 15 min after the AN-124 landed a USAF C5-a took off in the direction the Russians came from, the south. Now I've worked in this area a long time and NEVER seen one of our planes take off to the south, and there is no wind today. Also, this is a civilian version of the AN-124, painted white and blue, I know they land at civilian airports at times (rarely) with cargo but why land at a US military base? Did they have a delivery for the C5 which was in such a hurry that it didnot even have time to take off to the north and turn around to the south, it just took off to the south directly???? |

The Russian-built AN124 Ruslan is the world’s largest and highest flying cargo capacity aircraft in production. It’s designed for long-range deliveries, including air drops of large cargo items like machines, equipment, and troops. Another cool feature, the nose of the plane opens upward to reveal the front cargo hatch, and there is a cargo hatch in the rear fuselage. You can see the craft up close at Meadows Field where it will be on display from 7 p.m. until 11 a.m. Friday. Nothing to see here folks, keep moving./ OBAMA - THE FASTEST FAILED PRESIDENT IN AMERICAN HISTORY "I inherated and I am Great!" |

Thats been almost a dozen years ago. They were hauling a local logging outfit over to harvest Russian lumber. Ended up a bad deal Russian lumber was deficient, full of bugs, not good wood. There are a contingent of russians working in Tulsa on the composite fabrications. Sorry, no conspiracy fellows. |

i is that which i is User ID: 155774 United States 05/22/2007 02:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | These big birds use lots of fuel. Every minute on the ground taxiing, or in the alr costs money. The reason planes usually take off and land into the wind is to reduce the time from land speed to flight speed. If there is no wind, and no air traffic, it does not matter which direction they take off and land, so the shortest distance from terminal to end of runway is best plus if the takeoff run is in the direction you wish to go, it also saves fuel over having to make a big circle. The An 124 aircraft is hired by many private companies to transport large payloads around the world. Perfectly above boiard, legal, and not fear inspiring at all, unless you are totally ignorant of civil aviation. Shoot, at an airport less than 10 miles from my home are two MiG 21s, half a dozen Mif 15s and 17s, and about a dozen L-39s. NO WORRIES, COMERADE User ID: 32062 United States 05/22/2007 02:58 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We have been training with the Russians since the end of the cold war. It is very common to have them on US bases. Quoting: PACNWguyIts not an invasion. Yup, you might even see the occasional Bear Bomber do an overfly of your city: [link to www.barksdale.af.mil] "The base turned its attention from combat to more peaceful pursuits when two B-52s, a KC-10 and their crews visited Dyagilevo Air Base, Russia , in March 1992. In May 1992 Barksdale hosted a return visit by two Russian Tu-95 "Bear" bombers, an An-124 "Condor" transport and 58 Russian airmen. The Russians stayed for six days, seeing a slice of America and participating in Strategic Air Command's final Bombing and Navigation Competition awards symposium. The Russians visited again in August 1994, bringing a Tu-95 "Bear" and an I1-78 aerial tanker." |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 240419 Ireland 05/22/2007 03:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Thanks, OP, for posting this, and all of you others who added to our knowledge. We learned something today. It is puzzling, though, that if there are strained ties again between the U.S. and Russia, why permit a Russian aircraft to land at a MILITARY base? Cold war, my butt. There isn't enough military left in the U.S. to put down an open rebellion, so the solution is to hire mercenaries from other countries under the guise of UN troops. . |
