"Should Vermont Secede from the United States?"
[link to www3.digitalfrontier.com]

Friday, March 30, 9:30 pm

What would Vermont be like if it had never joined the union?

The Green Mountain State was an independent republic for 14 years — and only in 1791 did it join the thirteen original colonies. But some Vermont residents say that was a big mistake — and it's now time to leave the United States behind.

On March 7th, in an event sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council, University of Vermont political science professor Frank Bryan sparred with lawyer and historian Paul Gillies over the issue.

The event was held before a live audience at the University of Vermont, and included a question-and answer-session. While the topic of secession may sound silly, it's one that often sparks serious debate.

Join program host Kristin Carlson for taped coverage of this quirky and very spirited discussion: Should Vermont peaceably secede from the United States?

Re: "Should Vermont Secede from the United States?"
I can't understand why no other state is doing this...or why any state would allow themselves to be governed by such a corrupt bunch of thugs!!

An alarming number of politicans are being investigated for illegal activities possibly the most ever of any US congress, the very same elected types who fail to even read the laws they create (consider the Patriot act). These crimes are severe and in my opinion 'make the entire federal gov one large mafia' as well as not deserving of our tax dollars or support.

Instead they all deserve to be enemy combatants and share a cell with Paris...

...well maybe Paris deserves better.

Could the VT population be that much smarter then the rest of the US??

Or better said how does the fed keep us so ignorant of thier true criminal activities??

For a brief example, congress has lacked an 'ethics chair' for some time...

Gonzales has succeeded in firing attorneys investigating GOP for corruption, still kept his job and it is unknown how many rules and proceedures he has re-written to 'streamline gov business' to suit the pres behind the backs of congress and the american people.

Why does the nation allow the Attoney General to do criminal activity??

Is it not a crime against the constitution to 'rid hapeas corpus' of every american citizen??

Is it not a crime for the President of the US to lie to the public??

Is it not a crime when 'war profiteering trumps constitutional laws'??

And since 'no authority exists to police the gov'; your support of them is a criminal act too... as if this wasn't enough of a disaster already it seems the dems are powerless to run things and listen to the people who put them back in power to make needed changes in policy... yup we've been tricked again.

...where's the hyperspace button

...somewhere in VT perhaps

Re: "Should Vermont Secede from the United States?"
as a former Vt resident from '94-'99,I'll give you some inside scoop on the state

one reason Vt is able to do what other states may want to is size and pop #, also there is no major city , unless you count Burlington and its environs which is just barely 50,000, the whole state is under 600,000, only Wyoming has a smaller population

you see, even smaller states have a major city many w/ corporate interests
with smaller towns its easier to find out what the general consensus is and grass roots campaigns actually can reach a majority , also people there generally seem to want to be informed as issues might impact there way of life, you would be hard pressed to find the same concern in most cities where life can be lived anomously, unless they maybe a part of a niche where they might be affected

also if Vt were to secede, there would be far less impact to the way of than for most states
also a huge majority of the state is under 25 or over 60
too young to worry or too old too worry about what consequences might arise down the line, they'll stay steadfast either way
