AC R2 D2 User ID: 255859 China 06/22/2007 05:58 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Recap of todays (070622) events so far: - Merkel thinks she has an offer to Poland that will succeeed. - The offer is publicly rejected. - Merkel trys to isolate Poland completely: Urges majority voe for a conference in autumn to get the constitution done. Poland would "have the chance to participate".... - Blair and Sarkozy not amused: Making Phone Calls to Warszawa - Open Protest against Merkels strategy of isolating Poland: Lithuania and other countries tell the Germans: Try harder to get an agreement! Lithuania even vows to support Poland - not because of theier positions but because of the "handling" of Poland by the German EU Presidency. - The role, priviliges and power of the newly renamed EU Foreign Minister is still undefined and on the agenda. GB wants this to be reduced to the min., Luxemburg, pain and others want the EU FM to have the full power as written down in the "constitution". Next possible crack line here. - ...stay tuned, the story goes on, this is the night that changes Europe - its importance perhaps even on par with 1989/11/9 |

Too much arrogance and power in every respect. And even if they get this meeting in autumn done, then the complete codex must be approved in every single country. This means Ireland and Denmark will have referendums, at least. And all this takes time. At least one year lost. IF nothing happens - hehe. EU -yeah - you made my day. |

Whatever User ID: 1595 Netherlands 06/23/2007 11:55 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Poland wanted more influence, because it would have had a larger population, had it not been for the german invasion in '39.B.S ofcourse,as it stands Poland has almost as much influence (38 million citizens) as has Germany (80 million). So what the hell were they on about, those terrible twins. They've just been set aside, rightly so IMO. On the other hand, the dutch government was able to downsize the significance of a federal European state,by nullifying the european constitution,no more european anthem?,no secretary for foreign affairs, more influence for national parliaments, with the option of voting down a european decision, supported by few others and less european influence in local affairs. I'd say our P.M. Jan Peter Balkenende is more the hero than Poland,as I see it... |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 52612 Netherlands 06/23/2007 01:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | European Union leaders have reached agreement in Brussels on an outline of new rules to govern the 27-member bloc. At dawn on Saturday they announced a compromise to delay until 2014 a new voting system that reduces Poland's influence - the main stumbling block. Other proposals envisage a long-term president and a foreign affairs head. The new treaty, expected to be finalised later this year, preserves much of the planned EU constitution, which was rejected by voters in 2005. The treaty will need to be ratified by each of the EU's member states, before entering into force in mid-2009. |
