I've yet to read the article, and may re-post after having done so, but that's a wild though not really shocking concept.
They are expecting the MW to collide with Andromeda in the distant future, but to think that we're already in the process of a galactic collision is a huge shift in the perceived paradigm with relation to how we view our own galaxy.
I always find (genuine) Space stuff absolutely fascinating and love Astronomy.
Anyway...off to read it now. *poof*

The reddish in the middle going upper left to lower right with the bluish thumbnail pictures that changes and shows up as one of the pictures on that Caltech 2MASS page is the photo of the infrared center of the Milky Way Galaxy -- all that color and points are all stars (looking towards the center of the Milky Way Galaxy)
But that is not all the stars in the galaxy, it is only a quarter to a half of a billion stars and that may still be a very, very small number of the total number of stars in the Milky Way Galaxy! |
