Teen Loses Chastity Ring Case
Updated: 14:31, Monday July 16, 2007

A teenager has lost her High Court challenge to be allowed to wear a Christian "purity ring" to school.

Lydia Playfoot, 16, claimed the ban imposed by the Millais School in Horsham, West Sussex, was an "unlawful interference" with her right to express her faith.

But lawyers for the school successfully argued that the purity ring was not an essential part of the Christian religion and contravened the school's uniform policy.

Lydia said she was "very disappointed" by the High court's decision.

"Slowly, over time, people such as school governors, employers, political organisations and others will be allowed to stop Christians from publicly expressing and practising their faith," she said.

Lydia was one of a group of Christians at the Millais School who wore the ring as a sign of their belief in abstinence from sex until marriage.

Her lawyer had argued that the school, which allows Muslim and Sikh students to wear headscarves and religious bracelets, was violating Lydia's right to "freedom of thought, conscience and religion" under Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Human rights barrister Paul Diamond accused the school authorities of relying on "folklore" information about religious requirements and had acted with no real knowledge.

Lydia said she would consult her legal team about a possible appeal.

"The school governors originally said it was for health and safety reasons that purity rings were banned from school, but have offered no evidence to support the view that wearing a ring could physically harm another pupil or staff member," she said.

She added: "As a Christian I do not agree with sex before marriage.

"I believe I have a right not only to state my Christian views on sex, but also to demonstrate my Christian faith and commitment to God and my future husband not to have sex before marriage, through the wearing of a purity ring."

Outrageous. Muslims in one school district are getting a foot bath and a room to pray and no one seems to be suing over that.

And kids can show up with all sorts of body parts pierced and any kind of foul tattoos or t-shirts that are disgusting but not this kind of a ring?

The courts have gone as crazy as some of the school districts.

School district? Don't you mean UNIVERSITY? There is a bit of difference...although both are tax-funded.

What a bunch of rediculous interference !!!

Now if this girl wore a ring that had sharp points on it
or shaped like brass knuckles.......the school board might have a reason to say no.

But a "ring".....simple ring...not a weapon....not covered with profanity or veiled threats.....it's ludicrous to ban such an item. Maybe if it was shaped like boobs or a penis

What's next....school will allow muslims to wear a plastic fake dynamite belt while disalowing a christian for carrying a bible ?

I'd love to get my hands on these anti-freedom nutjob administrators.

Yes... it is Anti Christian....The NWO has to eliminate the Bible believing Christians in order to usher in the Anti Christ. The push is on to demonize them as we speak and breathe.

But yes scripture warns us this will happen in the last days.

Don't forget, this is an ENGLISH school where everybody has to wear a uniform. No obscene t-shirts there! But it seems to me if Muslims are allowed to wear headscarves with their uniforms, she ought to be allowed to wear that ring, even though it is silly.

Why do you deem it silly?

If it means something to her, who are you to call it silly?

Furthermore, if it were truly silly, why on Gods' green earth would the school officials give a shit?

While I wouldn't allow any religious symbols to be worn, including muslim headscarfs, at least the headscarf is a solid part of their religion. A 'purity ring' is just some new age religion trash with no foundation in the religion. In other words, its just a ring.

I have to agree with the court on this one.

If this happend in the States, she could probably have gotten the ACLU to back her. Although they normally don't get credit for it, they do help kids that want to wear religious symbols at school. Yes, including Christians.

You have to go by the uniform rules at the school you attend. Students can be expelled for not wearing proper school uniform....something I struggled with daily as a teenager. I would suggest that the school ban muslim headscarfs though, as France has done.

This particular uniform policy can be read here -> [link to www.millais.co.uk]

JEWELLERY- This is not part of school uniform and MUST NOT BE WORN. Girls with pierced ears may wear one pair of plain ear "studs" - which must be removed for P.E.
Other studs including nose and tongue studs are not permitted.

not being allowed to wear a ring is dumb enough without bringing the religious bs into it. but if the school rule is no jewelry whatsoever then who gives a fuck? christ-stains always ready to bitch and moan.

I bet if she had been wearing Masonic symbols or an upside down cross or perhaps the Satanic 6 pointed star of David there would have been no problem!!!

So the muslims can wear their religious garb but a christian can't? That is just plain lopsided. What if the next thing is something that is important to you? This is a creeping theft of all our rights happening, christians now, maybe new ager stuff next, or whatever, I think it is dangerous, like a snowball rolling down a hill.

As long as the muslims get to wear their sheets to school, the Christians should be able to wear their rings/whatever else.
