The manipulators probably decided that to remove the exempt status was not worth as much to them as retaining a base of voters who can be manipulated with the fear of loosing their exempt status?

Shit, taxing them and giving avg citizens exempt status would probably be a perfect replacement for current tax revenue AND give us some reason to finally believe that these so called christians really do want to help people. AND, they'll get a better idea of where their tithing REALLY goes.
