Anybody who has any sense knows that the best thing that theycan do is educate themselves.

Learn how to find water, and make it potable. How to find food and what is edible and what isn't.

Learn to make tools, build homes, and other structures to me our needs.

We need to learn how to make fire from what we have around us.

Then if youwant to, stock up on some basic tools that might be useful under a variety of circumstances:

Knife
Sharpening stone
high capacity water filter
flint and steel
mischmetal firestarter
and a well thought out first aid kit.

I've got this and more in a small bugout bag with room to spare.

It's versatile, easily portable and defensible. And none of it except the water filter looks like anything special.

i think the issue of the feds coming to confiscate private stockpiles of food is a serious one. especially if there are shortages of supplies from official sources. there is also the issue of needing to leave your home for whatever reason [in a protracted crisis] and not being able to take a lot with you....how much can two or three people carry?

Oh, right! Since 95 percent of the population has little to no supplies at all (even in the face of an impending threat like a hurricane), the fed government is REALLY going to bother going door to door just to confirm that no one has jack.

I agree. By survival techniques, I understand being able to survive from what nature has to offer. Very few things from civilization such as a knife are worth gathering. The rest either runs short fast or depends on a supply chain to maintain in the long term.

My favorite threads are the ones asking "Who has guns? or What's your favorite gun?" and seeing how many fools actually ANSWER them!

Hubby brought me a present yesterday. At lunch, he stopped at our local big bookstore and bought me...a book. Isn't he just the sweetest? LOL! Such a romantic!

It wasn't a book of poetry. It was even better. It was the "ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING ... GROW MORE IN LESS SPACE" book by Mel Bartholomew. Hubby called me during his mid-afternoon break..."Oh, you are gonna LOVE this book." By the time he got it home, he'd already read quite a bit of it (shhhh...don't tell...it was a slow day at work).

It's WONDERFUL!!!

It's going to be my effort towards as much self-sufficiency as I can have in a suburban setting.
