New York alerNew York alert for 'dirty bomb'

Print From correspondents in New York | August 12, 2007

NEW York increased security in Manhattan after a website carried reports that Islamic militants intended to attack the city with a radiological device.

Police spokesman Brian Sessa said authorities were using radiological monitoring equipment at the city's bridges and tunnels after the threat appeared on the Israeli website Debka.com.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the precautionary measures were no different from other counter-terrorist activity in New York since the September 11 attacks of 2001, and that the city's security level was unchanged at "orange".

He said the New York Police Department began to increase security late on Friday to guard against what he described as an "unverified threat".

"These actions are like those that the NYPD takes every day - precautions against potential but unconfirmed threats that may never materialise.

"As New Yorkers, we have gone about our lives even with the daily threat level at 'orange' every day since September 11, 2001.

"That threat level has not changed because of this unverified threat, and we shouldn't let anyone terrorise us by spreading fear,'' he said.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security in Washington played down the danger.

"It's unsubstantiated. There continues to be no credible information telling us that there is a specific imminent threat to the homeland at this time,'' Veronica Nur Valdes said.

"The threat level hasn't changed in New York. It's still orange,'' she said.

"Local officials have a responsibility to make decisions that are best suited for their community.''

The Debka report said that the website had monitored "a rush of electronic chatter on al-Qaeda sites on Thursday.

The messages said attacks would be carried out "by means of trucks loaded with radioactive material against America's biggest city and financial nerve centre", the website reported.

Another message reportedly mentioned New York, Los Angeles and Miami as targets.

"The attack, with Allah's help, will cause an economic meltdown, many dead, and a financial crisis on a scale that compels the United States to pull its military forces out of many parts of the world, including Iraq,'' it said.

Debka's Giora Shamis told the Israeli Yediot Aharonot newspaper: "We never know if the threat is real or not, but if you follow these publications for years, you can get a feel for whether the threat is serious or not.

"This time this threat seemed - due to the intensiveness of the exchange of messages - to be more serious than others.''

New York, like many other world cities, has been on a heightened state of security ever since the September 11 attacks, with increased security presence notably in public areas, offices, train stations and especially airports.

In early July, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said the United States faced a higher risk of a terrorist attack over the northern summer.

"I believe we are entering a period this summer of increased risk,'' he said.

"We've seen a lot more public statements from al-Qaeda. There are a lot of reasons to speculate about that, but one reason that occurs to me is that they're feeling more comfortable and raising expectations,'' he said.

Re: New York alert for 'dirty bomb'Quote

As a native New Yorker who's currently parking his ass in West Hollywood at Sunset and Crescent Heights Blvd as I type - let me tell you there is ALWAYS a new alert. The midtown tunnel often sports cops and military types with real automatic weapons. (I guess they're gonna shoot any muslims coming in from Queens - especially if they're carrying a large box marked with a big yellow Triangle and the label "NUCLEAR MATERIAL" painted on it somewhere! Probably in a Hertz Penske Rented truck! (Seriously, if you saw these 25 year old kids out there in their full battle regalia complete with machine guns, etc., then you can begin to imagine what we as New Yorkers are seeing on a daily basis! These young kids may well shoot some of the Bridge and Tunnel cops, or themselves, but one has the distinct feeling they'd be scant good against a terrorist if one were dumb enough to advertise the fact that he/or she was a terrorist! Personally I'm afraid that if my EasyPass doesn't work, they might shoot me for trying to get through the tunnel gate without paying the four dollar toll each way!)

Another busy weekend in NYC and another terrorist alert of one sort or another. Fuck these muslim/arabs. Let them get it on again! I think for every one of our cities attacked we should pick one like sized city in the middle east and destroy it with nukes fired from our far distant (and safe) shores! After they loose Damascus, Bagdad (if there's much left of it) and a few other, then and only then will they decide that maybe the price for killing western culture - as they wish to do - is a far too high price to pay! We may not be here, Mr. Muslim, but neither will any of you fuckers! Can't spend your oil riches from your grave - can you bastards? And if Israel wants to stand by and cheer with glee or joint in - I really don't care. This isn't about preserving Israel. This is about preserving a western civilization that survived the fall of the Roman Empire, the Dark Ages, the Reniasance, The Inquisition, and has almost survived three terms of a Bush in the WhiteHouse, too! We're not that easy to kill off!
