Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
My buddy invited me to attend his church this morning. It is a Foursquare Church. Wonder if anyone knows if this is a cult of some kind....
It was started by a woman named Aimee Semple McPherson back in 1928.

It has cultic aspects, and has been expecting the world to end for 70+ years.

Heck no, it isn't a cult. It's just one of the 33,000 flavors of Protestantism. When they disagree/get tired/or have an ego moment, they whip up another batch of new denominations. Been doing it since the 1600's.

That doesn't hurt her batting average as a Protestant. Not one bit. It's pretty tame considering the antics of the TV preachers.

Here's a list:

Fake Television Evangelist I.Q. Test

The vast majority of TV preachers are "charismatic/pentecostal", who make claims of miraculous healings if you send in your cash. All the TV preachers on this page are "charismatic/pentecostal". Take this quiz and find out how much you know about these men.

I was raised in the Foursquare church--close to 30 years. Its a cult. Aimee Semple McPherson was an outspoken atheist and product of Freemasonry before she fell for her husband--who happened to be an evangelist, so..she converted. She believed that she was the reincarnation of Mary Magdelene, and was once the wife of Jesus. She also faked her own kidnapping; had numerous affairs and eventually ended her life with a drug overdose. They've always said it was an accident, but whose to say. Nothing else in her life comes out straight.

To this day, members of the Foursquare church refer to her as "Sister Aimee"--as if she were a saint.

Why are you judging her more harshly than any of the other Protestants who started their own denominations?

Martin Luther was responsible for the slaughter of over 100,000 Protestant German peasants as well as condoning the torture and death of Prostestants and others who disagreed with him.

Take an honest look at some of the people who have been "spiritual" leaders and you'll find much more and much more embarassing people than McPherson.

She was one of the first and most famous of the Protestant fundamentalists. Her church is a recognized Pentecostal denomination.

Look, I do not mean to sound judgemental. I just don't believe that she was the reincarnation of Mary Magdalene. Honestly, I don't think that Jesus was about starting a church as all! It seems to me that most of the churches turn you into Pharisees. That is the very thing that Christ taught AGAINST. I believe he taught about building a relationship with your Heavenly Father...one on one...not looking to a church or organization for answers. Just my opinion.

Go to a Foursquare. Maybe a few times. It is not a cult. It is lined up with scripture more so than other main stream churches. I really think you should not have judgement until you have more understanding of God. Then you will be able to answer the question, "Is the Foursquare Church a cult or whatever else. God bless you.

The bible says in Romans that he who is spiritual judges all things. It also says, to abstain from those who say that Godliness is a means of gain. In other words who promise prosperity, money, health etc, in exchange for godliness. That sound familiar? It is our biblical mandate to abstain. It is God's to judge. But we are called to discern.

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
It has cultic aspects, and has been expecting the world to end for 70+ years.

How is that any different from the Christian religion? All organized religions are cults. There is the leader and the followers...or sheep. They are taught to look outside themselves for salvation.

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
Not particularly. They have some "weird" aspects, the whole pentecostal singing, talking in tongues thing, and they're more likely to play rejiggered rock songs with christian lyrics, but it depends on where you're at, which region, which church.

IMO, they seemed pretty loosely tied together compared to other protestant churchs, such as methodist, nazarene, baptist, etc. That has it's good aspects (they aren't walking lockstep off a cliff), and it's bad aspects (there's little oversight, so various churches may get pretty far off the reservation before anyone notices).

They do tend to focus on a younger crowd, and that has the usual cult dangers, as does anything where you have an overabundance of relatively young, naive, spiritually clueless people overwhelming and too dependent on a smaller number of older, wiser, more learned folks. Ideally things should be balanced, so the old-timers don't get stale, and the younger folks don't fly off on some strange tangent due to a lack of understanding, or a poor interpretation.

But on the whole, the church has it's oddities, but it's no more a cult than any of the other bizarre churches out there.
