They're a Holy Spirit type church -- probably -- so they will speak in tongues, roll on the floor, etc.

Wow, go to the church and find out...it isn't a cult. Dr. Jack Hayford is the president of the denomination...listen to him online...does he say anything contrary to the bible...no? Probably not a cult then...

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
I agree, I believe Dr. Jack Hayford (the aging, main guy in the modern foursquare movement) is a really amazing guy. He might almost be considered as a modern day apostle, bridging many divides....he embraces teachings about christians being "equipped", yes, he goes kinda too far in the area of "deliverance from demons"---but then again, there seems to be a lot of demonized individuals out there coming to the Foursquare for "cleansing"- some of it is real, but also some people with mental illness or vivid imaginations.....
The Foursquare churches vary, some place more emphasis on extraordinary stuff than others. They are "right wingers", and tolerance for liberal views is not appreciated. But if you get to know them, they are just like everyone else, and many of them do some very nice things for their fellow man. There is a lot of good to be said about this organization and it's people....
They are no better and no holier than other groups, they are probably right-on with many things, such as Jesus Christ, but off based in other non essential areas. I love my Foursquare bretheren.......

The one in Tega Cay, South Carolina seems cultish.

The children program is very good but that was there before foursquare showed up.

The adult program, as you continue through there "classes", gets very cult like.

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
I grew up in this church for over 14 years, and while there are some that take it to the extreme.. I didn't experience it as a cult. Yes they believe in certain things that may seem a little crazy to others (faith healing, speaking in tongues, etc) but I never experienced any sort of brain washing or mind control there.

After attending that church, I did attend a church who claimed to be foursquare .. which was definitely a cult. I experienced a lot of forced control over my and other's lives.

So, it may be a little strange at first.. people jumping around, speaking in tongues, falling over "in the spirit" but these don't necessarily make it a cult. It's just Pentecostal ;) And the denom may not be for you. But that's okay! I don't agree with Baptist's doctrine and other non-denom churches in my area - but that doesn't mean they are automatically a cult.

Go to a Foursquare. Maybe a few times. It is not a cult. It is lined up with scripture more so than other main stream churches. I really think you should not have judgement until you have more understanding of God. Then you will be able to answer the question, "Is the Foursquare Church a cult or whatever else. God bless you.
 Quoting: One that knows 490705

I also suggest you attend a Four Square Church. If all of you are claiming Christ, I'm thinking you may want to check your own fruit. What you are doing is sick and depraved.
I ask the Lord to bless you. The goodness of the Lord will lead men to repent.

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
Not particularly. They have some "weird" aspects, the whole pentecostal singing, talking in tongues thing, and they're more likely to play rejiggered rock songs with christian lyrics, but it depends on where you're at, which region, which church.

IMO, they seemed pretty loosely tied together compared to other protestant churchs, such as methodist, nazarene, baptist, etc. That has it's good aspects (they aren't walking lockstep off a cliff), and it's bad aspects (there's little oversight, so various churches may get pretty far off the reservation before anyone notices).

They do tend to focus on a younger crowd, and that has the usual cult dangers, as does anything where you have an overabundance of relatively young, naive, spiritually clueless people overwhelming and too dependent on a smaller number of older, wiser, more learned folks. Ideally things should be balanced, so the old-timers don't get stale, and the younger folks don't fly off on some strange tangent due to a lack of understanding, or a poor interpretation.

But on the whole, the church has it's oddities, but it's no more a cult than any of the other bizarre churches out there.
 Quoting: falldown

Don't belittle Talking in tongues - it's one of the gifts of the spirit - still in effect, not just for the early church. Few have it, however, while others mimic it.

There's nothing wrong with being a legalist. Jesus Christ was one, keeping the ten commandments, for one thing.

We attended the local 4square for a while. It's not a cult. The pastor here is awesome. That church does more to help the community than any other, and shows more love to the surrounding areas than imaginable. I credit the pastor, though, and not necessarily the denomination.

We left to go to another church, but my daughter stayed. She lives in another town, and drives back to go there. She loves it. We're still good friends with the pastor and his wife.

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
I am gay and have visited my local foursquare churches, they know me and my decision to come out ( I was big in some organizatiuons related-I will be vaugue) but discovered the truth , which is the bible has errors and being gay is totally fine, but my brotheren freak out and think its apostate to say such things. They tend to be emotional and threatened, some of the ladies are sweet but they try to drive a demon out of you if you dont size up. Prepare to have people walk up to you with "thus saith the Lord" and try to tell you who you are and what the Lord tells them you should do. This is very immature , shallow behavior, but ,unfortunately, change takes time. I have met fundamentalists in the organization that are so stuck up they think they do God a favot to treat people like me with distain. When I marry my partner, we will go back in love to show our bretheren its ok to be gay and we still belong to Jesus. This is not well recieved by them, but it needs to be shared in love, as its ok to be gay and a spirit filled christian....

....just sayin'

In my humble opinion, the greatest sin man has ever committed is the forming of organized religion in any form. Maybe once, way back in the beginning, the leaders of these organizations truly believed and were trying to do right, but now..... just don't see it. I really and truly don't believe that God approves of most of what's being said to be "His" word, and certainly not what is being done in "His" name!

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
Define your terms. What is a cult? If you define it loosely, every one is cultish, because everyone believes in something. But the narrower definition of "unorthodox or spurious" as applied to the Christian faith is another matter. Cult is generally applied to religious groups that claim divinely inspired writings equal in authority to the Bible, have a Christology that makes Jesus less than the only begotten son of God and therefore completely man and completely God, and believe salvation obtainable outside Christ's atonement on the cross. Believing in the Bible does not make a church or denomination a cult. While the foursquare church holds doctrinal positions contrary to my understanding of scripture, they are not a cult in the classical sense of the term.

Heck no, it isn't a cult. It's just one of the 33,000+ flavors of Christianiny. When they disagree/get tired/or have an ego moment, they whip up another batch of new denominations. Been doing it for a couple thousand years.

YIKES!!!I used to attend one of these!!!
Revelation 1:7 "Behold, He comes with clouds; and every eye shall see Him, and they also which pierced Him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of Him. Even so, Amen."

Zechariah 12:10 "And I will pour on the house of David, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look on Me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for Him, as one mourns for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for Him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn."

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
I am familiar with Foursquare. I spent years complaining to them about fraud involving their leaders. Unfortunately, the people I was complaining to were involved in even greater crimes. Paul Risser, recently president of the Foursquare Corporation, finally had to resign after many millions were stolen from the church itself.

This is not just recent history. Foursquare was started by Aimee McPherson shortly after she was indicted for faking her own kidnapping. I think she incorporated the church to protect its assets from civil suits (two people died as a result of the "kidnapping").

People can debate whether or not Foursquare is a "cult," but the bottom line is that Foursquare is dangerous. If you want to keep your family safe, keep them away from Foursquare. I and many others have learned that lesson the hard way.

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
Seemed like an evangelical protestant church, based on the Bible the times I visited one.

But once, and this was years ago, the service started with a group of young women- teenagers, all dressed in long white dresses in flowing Grecian style. They were dedicating their new Queen and Court- wore laurel style headdresses too.
This reminds me of the Jobs Daughters- which is a Masonic order for young women- wives and daughters of Master Masons. No judgement implied- I just noticed the similarity.

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
friends,

I attended a Foursquare church for a while and found it to be slightly cultish.

They kicked one guy out of their church because he liked to party and have sex with girls. Kicking someone out of church because they're a sinner is against everything i believe.

i also had a guy tell me that I needed to go to just their church and shouldn't attend the other churches I attend. That same guy seemed to look down on Baptist Worship and seemed to think their church's Worship is better.

There also seems to be beliefs and practices pertaining to Spiritual gifts in this particular church I was at, that seem to be slightly contrary to things I have read in 1 Corinthians.

I'm not saying these people are wrong, but I am saying that many of their practices are contrary to what I believe.

Actually, dude - that's scriptural.

His sins might cause another to stumble.

The Bible gives us specific instructions in this case.

Matthew 18:15-17 (NLT), "If another believer sins against you, go privately and point out the fault. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back. But if you are unsuccessful, take one or two others with you and go back again, so that everything you say may be confirmed by two or three witnesses. If that person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church. If the church decides you are right, but the other person won't accept it, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupt tax collector.

In other words - PUT HIM OUT.
