Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
Served as a minister for ICFG for over 25 years for no salary. Once I had a problem in my life the supervisor's talked a nice "redemptive" talk, but once they got my resignation, I got maybe 1 or two phone calls over next few months. Promised help was not given. Dropped and forgotten. No respect for them anymore. Still get mailers from Jack Hayford, though, inviting me to this and that. I think that is funny. They used to talk about "front line teams." Well...they let at least one wounded soldier die. I wonder how many others?

I'm sorry to hear that. Sometimes it's forgotten that God's grace is made perfect in our weakness. I'll remember you in my prayers brother.

See you hear, there, or in the air...

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
Alot of the Foursquare church doctrine is unscriptural.

I'd have to say it's a borderline cult.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 856055

Really?? Just what is so unscriptural? I'm a Pastor with Foursquare Churches in Canada, and I have not heard nor seen anything unscriptural within Foursquare Doctrine ever. And I am very big on lining up with what the Bible says alone. That's what attracted me to Foursquare in the first place. They actually strive to be Biblically-based in all their doings (though not perfect at it) it is our goal.

Yeah, so our founder Aimee Semple McPherson had issues... don't we all. Read your Bible, David was an adulterer and a murderer, Abraham lied to Pharoah, Gideon was a coward and Peter was a hypocrite... the list goes on. God uses imperfect, uneducated, frail people. That's why he gets all the glory and credit that only He as "GOD" deserves.

When people ask questions on forums like these they are looking for knowledgable and credible answers, not "Oh I think..." If you don't know, don't answer.

I know personally that the Foursquare Church is no cult. Foursquare itself means JESUS CHRIST as Saviour, Healer, Baptizer in the Holy Spirit, and Soon Coming King.... it's all in the Bible.

What defines a cult as such, is their view of the person of Jesus Christ. If an organized group with "quote" "unquote" spiritual leaders views Jesus as anything or anyone other than who He specifically revealed Himself to be according to the Bible alone, then they would be a cult. A church is defined as having the God-man Jesus Christ as their head, and we listen to and follow Him alone.

So my friend who asked the question... here's your answer. We're all human, we all make mistakes, we all have been hurt, and have hurt others, but I do know that Foursquare is not a Cult and you will be safe there.

No, The Four Square church International is not a cult...their beliefs follow orthodox Christianity for further investigation See: [link to www.foursquare.org]

I have never heard that they were expecting Jesus to come for the last 70 years, but in actuality the church has been expecting him for 2012 years

The Foursquare logo says all they believe in a nutshell

The meaning behind it

"Foursquare" is a Biblical term used of the tabernacle in the Book of Exodus, of the Temple of the Lord in Ezekiel 40:47, and of Heaven, as described in the book of the Revelation. The term "Foursquare Gospel" was given in the inspiration of revival to the denomination's founder, Aimee Semple McPherson, during an evangelistic campaign in Oakland, Calif., in 1922. It represents that which is equally balanced on all sides, established and enduring. Such confidence in the power of the Gospel is also expressed by the verse, Hebrews 13:8, displayed in Foursquare churches proclaiming, "Jesus Christ the Same, Yesterday and Today and Forever."

The name represents the four-fold ministries of Jesus:

The Savior

"But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him..." –Isaiah 53:5 (Titus 2:14, Isaiah 55:7, Hebrews 7:25, Isaiah 1:18)

The Baptizer with the Holy Spirit

"For John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit... you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." –Acts 1:5,8 (John 14:16-17, Acts 2:4, Acts 8:17, Acts 10:44-46, 1 Corinthians 3:16)
The Healer

"He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses..." –Matthew 8:17 (Mark 16:17-18, Matthew 9:5-6, Acts 4:29-30)

The Soon-Coming King

"For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout... the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord." –1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (Titus 2:12-13, Matthew 24:36-44, Hebrews 9:28, Luke 19:13, Luke 12:35-37.)

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
as a believer in JESUS CHRIST and and follower of HIS Church i am saddened by all the misinformation that in the world today about what a true church is.religion is not the Church, only a true believer who prays and studies Gods word can understand what Gods HOLY SPIRIT teaches us.we try and figure GOD out in our finite minds,we try and put Him a box we lump all churches/religions into one lump and the worst is most of what i have read just on the first page about the foursquare is simply idiotocy period.Jesus started His Church when he asked his disciples who did the people think he was.peter answered and said you are the Christ the SON of the living GOD.Jesus then responded by telling them that no human could know such truth, but by the power of God and he said to peter upon this rock i will build my (CHURCH)from that time until now we have had satan try his best to stop this.Jesus was the first to state and followed up by every book in the new testament carried the same meassage that people led by satan woudd try and destroy HIS Church.ain't gonna happen.but we are warned especially as we approach the very last days of Christs church on earth many false teachers, prophets, followers and evangelists would emerge and grow like maggots on a corpse.that is what religion has done.most so-called churches out there are nothing more than meeting places for the walking dead or the frensied mob.the foursquare is just one of many false and HELLBOUND religions.along with muslims, catholics, all other pentecostal brands, mormans hindues, buddists, sientology, all period.(ONE CHURCH).being a true Christian is having a real relationship with the King of KINGS JESUS.get this, its a relationship, not a filthy satanic inspired, man led religion.get right with him or spend eternity in the lake of fire.its all up to you,all by yourself and GOD almighty if he excepts you.JESUS is coming soon, you are running out of time.i say this in Christian love but i say it (I DONT CARE WHAT YOU THINK OF ME)but you better care what God thinks of you.one more thing, all you atheists out there tell God you dont believe in him on the day of judgement,as you urinate down your legs in stark terror GOD said it,i believe it and that for me settles it.get over it and get right!!!

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
Not particularly. They have some "weird" aspects, the whole pentecostal singing, talking in tongues thing, and they're more likely to play rejiggered rock songs with christian lyrics, but it depends on where you're at, which region, which church.

IMO, they seemed pretty loosely tied together compared to other protestant churchs, such as methodist, nazarene, baptist, etc. That has it's good aspects (they aren't walking lockstep off a cliff), and it's bad aspects (there's little oversight, so various churches may get pretty far off the reservation before anyone notices).

They do tend to focus on a younger crowd, and that has the usual cult dangers, as does anything where you have an overabundance of relatively young, naive, spiritually clueless people overwhelming and too dependent on a smaller number of older, wiser, more learned folks. Ideally things should be balanced, so the old-timers don't get stale, and the younger folks don't fly off on some strange tangent due to a lack of understanding, or a poor interpretation.

But on the whole, the church has it's oddities, but it's no more a cult than any of the other bizarre churches out there.
 Quoting: falldown

Don't belittle Talking in tongues - it's one of the gifts of the spirit - still in effect, not just for the early church. Few have it, however, while others mimic it.

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
Define your terms. What is a cult? If you define it loosely, every one is cultish, because everyone believes in something. But the narrower definition of "unorthodox or spurious" as applied to the Christian faith is another matter. Cult is generally applied to religious groups that claim divinely inspired writings equal in authority to the Bible, have a Christology that makes Jesus less than the only begotten son of God and therefore completely man and completely God, and believe salvation obtainable outside Christ's atonement on the cross. Believing in the Bible does not make a church or denomination a cult. While the foursquare church holds doctrinal positions contrary to my understanding of scripture, they are not a cult in the classical sense of the term.
 Quoting: revtcole 903742

follows doctrinal truth,(HOGSLOP).women teaching men, strictly forbidden by paul, talking in tongues, slain in the spirit, false fire, uncontrolled laughing.the pentecostal churches/charismatic have done more harm to the faith than than most of the cults i study.second only to but catching up fast to the catholic religion.GODS HOLY SPIRIT was sent by JESUS to guide us in all truth.this cheap imitation of a church has blaphemed HIM at every turn.btw this is the one SIN that cannot, nor ever will be forgiven.study GODS word and ask the HOLY SPIRIT to open your eyes to the truth.if you are truly born again, but are being misled,HE will show you the WAY.oh and about tongues being one of the gifts, paul clearly teaches they will cease.in the future when CHRIST is on earth they and the rest of the gifts will be reinstated.also why are tongues so used today, more than the other 8 mentioned.because its easy to FAKE

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
I attended and served in the ministry at a Church of the Foursquare Gospel for over 5 years. I was a babe and knew nothing, was not raised in a Christian home. But as I grew in biblical knowledge, I began to ask them questions. The elder ones and the leaders seemed like loving folks, but so do the Mormons (Joseph Smith, founder, said the book of Mormon was dictated to him by an angel named Moroni. There are police records that clearly state Joseph was arrested for soothsaying and if you drop the "i" off of the name Moroni you have the word "moron" and Mormon has a one letter change as well ... remove the second "m" and what word do you have? Yuppers, the word is "moron" as well). I mention this because I think it shows how good folks can appear to be and yet be quite deceived. At 4square they do have a power, such as to be able to tell you what sin you committed during any particular week but then, so does a Buddist monk.

It's interesting that they try to distance themselves from their founder, which is the same as if the Mormons decided to denounce Joseph Smith as it's founder, and then to put up a new facade to get people to come in. Aimee's son had control of the reigns until not so long ago. Reminds me of the TV sitcom ... All in the Family.

Do yourself a favor and go ohnline and do a search with keywords "Ben Bogard vs Aimee Sempton McPherson". It's a free pdf file.

You'll be in for a real eye opener ...

And while your at it, maybe see what you find as you try to answer the following question:

Where in the New Testament did anyone ever preach a foursquare gospel?

Aimee McPherson said the Holy Spirit gave her the church name "The Church of the Foursquare GOSPEL" during a revival meeting, by inspiration (which means direct revelation) so if there's no Foursquare gospel being preached in the bible then her inspiration was not from the Holy Spirit, but from the spirit of error.

Do you own due diligence (study the bible) and let Jesus show you His truth

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
The four square church most definately IS A CULT! A handful of it's present leaders in Spokane,WA. recently KIDNAPPED my neice, whom I thought was an intelligent, grateful, outgoing, beautiful young lady, from her loving, supportive, faithful, GOD LOVING family. This so called family of faith has used their "religion" to BRAIN WASH my neice into a subserviant school marm, who has become a CHRONIC LIER, in order to prove her happiness with her newfound faith. The only question left hanging in everyone's mind who knew her before her metomophisis, is, "in whom does her faith now truly lye, in GOD, or this CARTOON family???" Not only does she have to lie to the world, but also to herself, in order to convince herself of her faith in God. Her FOUR SQUARE FAMILY has convinced her that she has come from an abusive home she needs to WASH her hands of. I literally mean "Wash herself from," as she CLAIMS to be RE-BAPTIZED, I guess the four square church forgot that one may only be baptized once,I was one of many witnesses to her Catholic baptism at Holy Spirit Chruch in Butte, MT. As for the abusive home she came from, she was raised in an upper scale home, proivided only the best of necessities, sent to the best schools available, given the best opportunities to succeed in her GOD GIVEN talents, and loved deeply by her parents and older brother, whom she now has to discard in order to be ACCEPTED into her new family. ONE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO GIVE UP ONE LOVING FAMILY IN ORDER TO BE ACCEPTED INTO ADDITIONAL FAMILY. That isn't how God works. But so be it, let it be known BEWARE OF THE FOUR SQUARE CULT! Guard your children if you wish to keep them.

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
Four square church is most definately a CULT! BEWARE of their CARTOON ANTICS in order to convince people to join thier so called family of faith. The only faith they convice you of is in themselves. One is not ALLOWED to LOVE anyone OUTSIDE OF THE CULT! You MUST give up any family and friends you have, in order to be ACCEPTED into the PURITY of the four square family, otherwise your not PURE enough for their standards. Once you are deemed acceptable, you have obviously become a chronic lier to yourself and the world in order to believe that you love GOD, and need only to be FAITHFUL in SUPPORTING THE FAMILY. That must be why they go after young, nieve, yet successful and ambicious members so they can count on financial support. GOD BE WITH YOU, should you get drawn in by thier fake faith and lies in the name of religion. If you are involved with the four square, I pry for you, and don not forget, even though you are LIVING A LIE, GOD KNOWS YOU, FORGIVES, AND TRULY LOVE YOU!

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
I work at a foursquare church and it IS NOT A CULT We preach the bible,We serve our community, We live life together like a family would.....We have Sunday school for our kids 0-12 grade below is what we believe:

The Fall of Man

We believe that Adam and Eve, the precursors of the entire human race, were created in the image of God; however, they disobeyed God and became sinners. Through Adam, all people inherited sin’s nature and consequences, and all are in need of a Redeemer (Genesis 1:27; Romans 5:12, 19).

The Plan of Redemption

We believe that Christ died for all of us while we were still sinners; He took the punishment for our sin. With His own blood, He purchased salvation and redemption for all who believe in Him (John 3:16; Isaiah 53:5; Titus 2:14).

Salvation Through Grace

We believe that salvation is totally an act of God’s grace that is accessed through faith in Jesus Christ. No person can be good enough to earn salvation, and “being good” does not contribute to receiving God’s love and favor (Ephesians 2:8, 13).

Repentance and Acceptance

We believe that, when people repent for their sins and accept Christ, they are justified through Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross. To repent means to be sorry for sins, but it also means to turn away from a sinful lifestyle. Accepting Christ means believing in Him as the only Savior. To be justified means being declared “not guilty” in regard to sin (Romans 10:9-10; 1 John 1:9).

The New Birth

We believe that the change that takes place in people when they are “born again” is very real. They receive righteousness through Jesus Christ, and they are empowered by the Holy Spirit; therefore, they should have new desires, interests and pursuits (John 3:3; 2 Corinthians 5:17).

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
All I'm reading is a bunch of hate towards either God or a denomination because of what a person or people did.

Is it not true that people make mistakes? Is it not true that what people do can, in fact, deviate us away from God's perfect plan?

japanboy, or whatever your name is, I'm sorry that you were mistreated in the church or churches that you attended, but is that the denomination's fault, or those people's fault?

I have lived and grown up in the fousquare church for years, and no, the pastors are not perfect, there is sin, and there is corruption. and to this i say so what?

no matter where you go these things will be there, and that is because the world is built upon people. people make mistakes, don't they? people sin, don't they? and that's what pastors are, they are people. A pastor can do wrong, because he's human, and just because he's a pastor does not mean that it's ok, it means that he made a mistake and needs to repent, and as brothers in christ it is our responsibility to either try and bring him back into God's grace, or if he IS poisoning the congregation, to CUT HIM OFF as it states in 1 Corinthians.

What I hear is people who are, for the most part hurt, and are therefore hurting others, and so while i am incredibly sorry for the ways that some of you have been mistreated, God calls for us to forgive, and to move on. So do that, move past your pain by going to God, and then help to make Foursquare into what it's supposed to be, instead of sitting on a forum, spreading lies and gossip.

Let he who has not sinned cast the first stone. Pastors are human too.

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
My buddy invited me to attend his church this morning. It is a Foursquare Church. Wonder if anyone knows if this is a cult of some kind....
It was started by a woman named Aimee Semple McPherson back in 1928.

All religions and various subsets and offshoots of subsets are cults.

True dat.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 297411

But what I don't know is why can't people see the obvious.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 297411

Because many are gullible, followers, fearful, and easily lead. These churches uses guilt & fear to keep them handled. They use praise & joy to lead them in.

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
Of course Foursquare is not a cult. We believe that Jesus is the only Son of God, was virgin born, lived, suffered and died on the cross. He arose from the grave 3 days later and is now seated at the right hand of the Father and will soon come again.

We are not Masons, have nothing to do with secret socities, we offer homage only to Jesus Christ. And for those of you that'd say that they come to your door and speak in tongues while the other person is telling you what was said is pure conjecture.

The Foursquare church is an exciting Pentecostal church that loves the Lord and loves its people. We are not extreme in any teaching allowin for people to make up their own limits and extremes (all done decently and in order) while maintaining proper decorum.
We believe that there is no salvation or savior besided Jesus, we teach that baptism in the Holy Spirit and yes people will speak in tongues, we believe that He (Jesus) is the healer, and our soon coming King.

Who are we? We are people that love the Lord and the people in our communities. We partner with other churches that teacher the lordship of Jesus Christ and long for the day when we will all be one in the Lord.

Re: Foursquare Church- Is it a cult?
It's a cult. McPherson gained fame in the 20's and was exposed as having faked her own kidnapping for publicity.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 349426

Actually that is only a theory.
The kidnappers were never caught, but that does not mean they never existed.
Many cases exist of kidnappings were the ransom was not paid and they let the person go anyway and were never caught.
It is just another conspiracy theory.
