Wonder if anyone knows if this is a cult of some kind.... Quoting: Anonymous Coward 266073It was started by a woman named Aimee Semple McPherson back in 1928. I was raised in the Foursquare church--close to 30 years. Its a cult. Aimee Semple McPherson was an outspoken atheist and product of Freemasonry before she fell for her husband--who happened to be an evangelist, so..she converted. She believed that she was the reincarnation of Mary Magdelene, and was once the wife of Jesus. She also faked her own kidnapping; had numerous affairs and eventually ended her life with a drug overdose. They've always said it was an accident, but whose to say. Nothing else in her life comes out straight. To this day, members of the Foursquare church refer to her as "Sister Aimee"--as if she were a saint. |

They have some "weird" aspects, the whole pentecostal singing, talking in tongues thing, and they're more likely to play rejiggered rock songs with christian lyrics, but it depends on where you're at, which region, which church. IMO, they seemed pretty loosely tied together compared to other protestant churchs, such as methodist, nazarene, baptist, etc. That has it's good aspects (they aren't walking lockstep off a cliff), and it's bad aspects (there's little oversight, so various churches may get pretty far off the reservation before anyone notices). They do tend to focus on a younger crowd, and that has the usual cult dangers, as does anything where you have an overabundance of relatively young, naive, spiritually clueless people overwhelming and too dependent on a smaller number of older, wiser, more learned folks. Ideally things should be balanced, so the old-timers don't get stale, and the younger folks don't fly off on some strange tangent due to a lack of understanding, or a poor interpretation. But on the whole, the church has it's oddities, but it's no more a cult than any of the other bizarre churches out there. ~ ~ "He who does not understand your silence will probably not understand your words." ~Elbert Hubbard |
